Backpacking in Periyar
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

A lot of people arrive at Periyar expecting a classic on-foot jungle trek with guaranteed tiger sightings; in reality, it’s more about slow, controlled wildlife viewing than adrenaline. Periyar National Park sits in the Cardamom Hills of Kerala, near Thekkady in southern India. For backpackers, it’s a mixed deal: the lake and forested hills are quietly beautiful, there are guided hikes and bamboo-raft trips, and you do see elephants, bison, and birds, but most “safaris” are boat-based and feel tame if you’ve done places like Bandipur or Nagarhole. It’s easy to reach by bus, but entrance and mandatory guide fees add up, and the main gate area gets crowded with day-trippers. Wild camping is basically off the table; instead you’re looking at cheap lodges and homestays in Kumily, with a mellow, slightly overdeveloped hill-town vibe.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #7 national park in India
Why visitors keep coming back

Periyar National Park attracts backpackers for its independent exploration opportunities. You can roam the trails without the constraints of guided tours, making it ideal for those who prefer to set their own pace. Budget-conscious travelers appreciate the camping and hostel options nearby, which keep costs low while providing a chance to connect with fellow adventurers. The park offers a variety of trails, from easy walks to more challenging hikes, catering to different skill levels. Plus, the chance to spot wildlife, like elephants and various bird species, adds a thrilling element to self-guided adventures. This combination makes Periyar a top choice for those seeking authenticity without breaking the bank.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Periyar

  1. Periyar Lake boat cruise — The classic way to see the park: slow boat rides at dawn or dusk concentrate wildlife at the water’s edge, so you’ll likely spot elephants, sambar, gaurs and lots of birds against a misty forest backdrop. (Personal favorite — nothing beats the quiet and those surprise sightings from the water.)
  2. Guided nature walks and the border trails — Short, ranger-led treks through evergreen forest and riparian zones; great for learning tracks, spotting smaller mammals, reptiles and endemic plants, and for getting off the beaten path safely.
  3. Periyar Tiger Trail (foot-safari) — A limited-permit, expert-led trek into core forest areas: it’s the best chance for close, ethical wildlife viewing on foot and for experiencing the forest at ground level (tougher, more rewarding than

  4. Gavi eco-tourism zone — Part of the reserve with neat jeep safaris, clean trails, and starry nights; quieter than Thekkady proper and excellent for rhododendron, cardamom plantations nearby, and scenic drives through montane forests.
  5. Bamboo rafting and river excursions — Seasonal bamboo-raft trips on tributaries bring a different angle on the landscape and birdlife; low-impact and peaceful, they’re ideal for photographers and birders who want slow, close views.
  6. Wildlife watching (elephants, gaurs, lion-tailed macaque and more) — The reserve supports large mammals and endemic species — elephant herds are the headline act, but keep an eye out for shy carnivores, sambar, and rare primates in the canopy.
  7. Birdwatching and wetlands — Periyar’s mix of lake, marsh and forest attracts kingfishers, hornbills, Oriental darters and migratory waterfowl; hit the lakeshore at sunrise for the best light and activity.

  • Topic: Weather and Temperature — The best window is from October to March when the climate is cool and dry. Expect daytime highs around 25-30°C (77-86°F) and nights dropping to 15°C (59°F). Avoid the monsoon months (June to September) when heavy rains flood trails and limit wildlife spotting.
  • Topic: Daylight Hours — Days are longest between November and February, offering roughly 11 to 12 hours of light. This stretch maximizes your trekking and boat safari time without rushing.
  • Topic: Crowds — Peak season aligns with the cooler months, so expect more tourists from December to February. If you want fewer people, aim for October or March, when the weather is still pleasant but the park is quieter.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations — Accommodation and park fees rise during peak season (December to February). Booking early can save money, but visiting shoulder months like October or March offers better value without sacrificing experience.
Pro-tip: Plan your visit just after the monsoon ends—trails are refreshed, wildlife is active, and you dodge the tourist crush and inflated prices.
