Backpacking in Varkala Beach
🏆 Top pickbeach ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Varkala Beach is the rare Indian beach town where you can eat decent hummus, get an Ayurvedic massage, and still find a room under ₹800 if you’re not picky about water pressure. It sits on Kerala’s Arabian Sea coast, just north of Trivandrum, and it’s basically a cliff-top strip staring down at a long, golden beach. For backpackers, it’s cleaner and more relaxed than Goa’s party zones, with fewer drunk package tourists and more barefoot yoga people comparing chakras over chai. The water can be rough with a strong shore break, so swimming is “pay attention” rather than “float and forget,” but it’s fine if you respect the flags. Surf is hit-or-miss, snorkelling is pointless, and diving is better saved for elsewhere in India. Food and rooms are easy on the wallet off-season, pricier in peak months, but still better value and calmer than nearby Kovalam’s more crowded, resorty scene.

Reasons people choose to visit here

Varkala Beach is one of those spots that backpackers can’t help but stop at, and for good reason. First off, the laid-back atmosphere is like a warm hug after a long trek. You can kick off your shoes, sink your toes into the sand, and let the waves wash away the stress of travel.

Then there’s the affordability factor. You can grab a meal that won’t break the bank, and the guesthouses are friendly on the wallet too. It’s a place where you can splurge on a fresh seafood dinner without feeling like you need to sell a kidney.

The social scene is another draw. You’ll find fellow travelers swapping stories over a cold drink, making it easy to connect. Whether you’re sharing tips or planning the next leg of your journey, the vibe is welcoming.

The social scene is another draw. You’ll find fellow travelers swapping stories over a cold drink, making it easy to connect. Whether you’re sharing tips or planning the next leg of your journey, the vibe is welcoming.

And let’s not forget the water access. Sure, you can swim, but Varkala serves as a connector along the coastal route. It’s a pause button, a chance to recharge before diving into the next adventure. So, if you’re in the area, don’t just pass by—embrace the absurdity of travel and soak it all in.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Clifftop promenade and sunset/sunrise views
The sheer red laterite cliffs are the signature of Varkala—stand up there and the whole Arabian Sea stretches away beneath you. Walk the cliff path, grab a spot on the edge and watch fishermen, kite flyers and boats paint the horizon; sunsets here are quieter and more cinematic than most Indian beaches. (Personal favorite: nothing beats a cliff sunset with a strong breeze and a cheap snack.)
  2. Papanasam holy dip and temple rituals
Varkala’s beach is also a pilgrimage spot—locals believe the waters wash away sins, so you’ll see people doing ritual baths and offerings, especially in the mornings. It’s a rare mix of a laid-back beach town and active religious life, so you get cultural texture that you won’t find on generic resort strips.

  3. Traditional Ayurvedic treatments and sunrise yoga with a sea view
The wellness culture is woven into the cliffside: yoga classes and Ayurvedic massages take advantage of the ocean backdrop, not a spa mall. A proper sunrise yoga session on the cliff feels purposeful rather than touristy, and the local therapists use simple, time-tested routines right by the sea.
  4. Boat trips, early-morning fishing scenes and dolphin spotting
Head out at dawn with the small local boats (or watch from the beach) to see how the fishing community works—net hauling, canoe launches and the odd dolphin surfacing. These trips give you a direct look at coastal life and a different coastline perspective that’s impossible from the cliff alone.
  5. Cliffside night vibe: acoustic music, bonfires and moonlit walks
Varkala’s night scene isn’t about loud clubs; it’s the whole cliff quietly alive after dark—acoustic sets, small bonfire circles near the sand, people strolling under the stars. If you want to hear the surf and see the moon over the sea instead of neon lights, this is the place. Night swimming is possible but be cautious of currents.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities - The dry season hosts yoga retreats, Ayurvedic treatments, and cliffside cafes buzzing with life. Monsoon months shut down most outdoor activities, turning the beach into a moody, rain-soaked ghost town.
  • Topic: Price Fluctuations - Expect wallet-tightening rates during peak season; accommodation and food prices can double. Off-season offers bargains but at the cost of unpredictable weather and limited services.
Pro-tip: Visit just after the monsoon, when the air is fresh, the crowds thin, and prices drop—Varkala’s charm shines brightest when it’s not trying too hard.

Varkala Beach is a backpacker’s paradise, but not all areas are created equal. You want to be close enough to the action without feeling like you’re in a human traffic jam.

Start with the cliffside accommodations. This area is buzzing with energy. You’ll find a mix of budget hostels and guesthouses, all with stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Avoid the areas too far from the beach. They might offer cheaper rates, but you’ll spend more time commuting than enjoying the surf. Trust me, nothing kills the vibe like a long trek back after a day of sun and sand. Stick to the cliffs and North Cliff for a balance of fun and relaxation.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Varkala Beach is a delightful mix of sun, surf, and the occasional rogue wave. Swimming here is generally safe, but keep an eye on the currents. The waves can pack a punch, especially during the monsoon season, so it’s wise to check with locals about the best spots to dive in. They know where the rips are hiding and where the water’s calmest.

As for marine life, you’re more likely to encounter a friendly fish than anything dangerous. Jellyfish can pop up occasionally, but they’re not a common concern. Just be aware of your surroundings and avoid swimming too far out.

Weather-wise, the sun can be relentless. Mornings are perfect for a dip, but by midday, you might feel like a rotisserie chicken. Seek shade and hydrate.
