Backpacking in Tanjung Tinggi Beach

You know what nobody tells you about Tanjung Tinggi Beach? If you time it right, you can have world-class granite boulders and glassy water for the price of a cheap scooter rental and a plate of nasi goreng. It’s on Belitung Island, off Sumatra’s east coast, and for backpackers it’s basically Indonesia’s “diet Seychelles”: clear, calm water, soft sand, and huge rocks made for clumsy Instagram heroics. It’s cleaner and far less chaotic than Bali’s main beaches, with mellow, mostly local crowds and easy swimming but zero real surf. Snorkeling is decent on a good-visibility day, not mind-blowing, and you’ll want reef shoes for the odd rock and sea urchin. Warungs and simple homestays sit just behind the sand, cheap and friendly, but public transport is a joke, so you’re renting a scooter or arranging a ride. Compared with nearby Belitung beaches like Tanjung Kelayang, Tanjung Tinggi feels more compact and cinematic, but also more “discovered” — not ruined, just no longer your private secret cove.

What makes this beach worth visiting

Tanjung Tinggi Beach is a backpacker’s haven for a reason. First off, the laid-back atmosphere feels like a warm hug after a long trek. You can kick back on the soft sand without breaking the bank—affordability is key here. The social scene is buzzing, with fellow travelers swapping stories over cheap beers. Plus, the water access is a game-changer; you can swim, snorkel, or just float your worries away. It’s not just a stop to dip your toes; it’s a connector along the coastal route, a perfect pause to recharge before the next adventure.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Tanjung Tinggi Beach

  • Hopping and scrambling between the gigantic granite boulders — The beach’s signature: enormous, weathered granite rocks piled like a natural sculpture garden. You can weave through narrow gaps, climb to little ledges, and find quiet pockets away from the sand. Personal favorite — it feels like exploring a rocky maze that belongs to nobody but the tide.
  • Snorkeling in the clear pools tucked by the rocks — Instead of a long reef stretch, you get little sheltered bays and tidal pools with excellent visibility and curious reef fish. The rocks create calm, shallow snorkel spots that are great for inexpensive mask-and-fin sessions without a big boat.

  • Iconic photo spots and cinematic scenery — Those boulders framing turquoise water produce shots you won’t get at a typical sand-only beach. Golden hour and low tide reveal dramatic compositions: boulder silhouettes, reflections, and tight passages that make an otherwise simple photo feel epic.
  • Headland viewpoints for sunrise, sunset, and stargazing — Walk up the rocky headlands for an unobstructed horizon. Sunrise and sunset light hitting the granite is something else, and on moonless nights the lack of town lights makes for surprisingly good stargazing or long-exposure night photos of the rocks.
  • Simple beachfront seafood and local beach life — Not a fancy restaurant scene, but small stalls and fishermen launching boats give a real, local vibe. Eat fresh grilled fish on the sand, watch boats come and go, and listen to the sea — an honest way to spend an evening without crowds or pretense.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Topic: Weather – Dry season from May to September is your best bet. Expect clear skies and minimal rain, perfect for beach lounging and snorkeling without the soggy interruptions.

  • Topic: Temperature – Daytime highs hover around 28-32°C (82-90°F), which is warm but not sauna-level. Nights cool down to a comfortable 23-25°C (73-77°F), so no need to pack your thermal underwear.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours – Roughly 12 hours of daylight year-round, but the sun sets earlier in the dry season, giving you ample time to chase sunsets without feeling rushed.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak season means more tourists, especially July and August. If you hate elbow-to-elbow beach time, aim for shoulder months like May or September.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry season is prime for diving and island hopping.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry season is prime for diving and island hopping. Wet season limits these options with choppier seas and less visibility.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect accommodation and tour prices to spike during peak months. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you a decent chunk of cash without sacrificing much.

Pro-tip: Visit just before or after peak season to dodge crowds and cash in on better deals—plus, the weather still plays nice.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Tanjung Tinggi Beach is a backpacker’s playground, and you’ll want to set up camp in the nearby village of Tanjung Pandan. It’s buzzing with fellow travelers, making it easy to swap stories over a cold Bintang.

Look for spots close to the beach; they’re often budget-friendly and have a social vibe. You’ll find a mix of guesthouses and homestays where the owners are as welcoming as your favorite aunt.

Avoid the tourist traps further down the coast. They might look pretty on Instagram, but they lack the character and camaraderie you crave. Stick to the local scene, and you’ll score the real Indonesia experience.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Tanjung Tinggi Beach is generally a chill spot, but keep your wits about you. The currents can be playful, especially during high tide, so stick to where the locals swim. They know the lay of the land—and the water.

Watch for jellyfish; they’re not always visible but can surprise you. Sun exposure is real, so slather on that sunscreen, especially in the afternoon when the rays are relentless.

Keep an eye on your belongings; theft isn’t rampant, but it’s smart to stay alert. Enjoy the beauty, but remember: a little caution goes a long way.
