Backpacking in Dena Protected Area
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 1, 2026

Most people only realize after they leave that Dena Protected Area is where you get true Zagros big-mountain trekking without the price, permits, and crowds of Iran’s headline peaks. Dena sits in the central Zagros range, mainly in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province in southwestern Iran, between Yasuj and Semirom. For backpackers, it’s a serious hiking playground: long ridge walks, oak forests, snow-capped 4,000 m summits, and real chances of spotting bears, wild goats, and birds of prey. Access from major cities takes time and a few vehicle changes, and trailheads aren’t always clearly marked, so navigation and basic Farsi help a lot. Entrance fees are low, camping is common, and village stays are cheap but simple. Compared with more famous areas like Zagros sections near Kuhrang or protected zones around Mount Damavand, Dena feels wilder, less serviced, and more rewarding if you’re self-sufficient.

  • Mount Dena summit and ridgelines — jagged limestone peaks rising above 4,000 m (highest around 4,409 m) with dramatic cirques and persistent snowfields; the high ridge walks give sweeping views across the Zagros and feel properly alpine despite being in southern Iran.
  • Alpine meadows and summer pasture (yaylak) — wide, flower-strewn plateaus in summer where shepherds graze flocks; great for wildflowers, camping, and simple, quiet mornings that smell of thyme and fresh grass.
  • Oak and mountain forests — thick stands of Zagros oak and mixed mountain woodland that carpet the mid-slopes; they offer shade, great birdlife, and striking autumn colors that contrast with the bare peaks above.

  • Springs, streams and highland tarns — clear mountain springs and small alpine lakes tucked into cirques; perfect spots to refill water, rest, and enjoy the sound of running water in an otherwise rugged landscape.
  • Wildlife: Persian leopard, bezoar goat and more — Dena is one of the better refuges in Iran for elusive species: Persian leopard, brown bear, bezoar (wild) goat, wild sheep, wolves and many raptors. Sightings are rare and best with a local guide, but the sense of real wildness is unmistakable.
  • Ridgeline and multi-day trekking routes — established routes link cols, saddles and summits for anything from long day-hikes to multi-day treks; routes from towns like Sisakht/Yasuj are classic starting points for proper mountain time.
  • Living cultural landscape (nomads and pastoral life) — seasonal Bakhtiari shepherd camps and grazing practices have shaped the area for centuries; encountering tents, herds and simple mountain hospitality adds a human layer to the wilderness experience.
