- Lar Dam and Reservoir — A massive turquoise lake tucked into a high mountain bowl; the contrast of still water against rugged Alborz cliffs is photographer candy. It’s the park’s landmark and the best place for easy shoreline walks and sunset views.
- Alpine meadows and wildflower valleys — In late spring and summer the slopes explode with colorful carpets of alpine flowers and grasses. Easy to access from trailheads, these meadows are perfect for lazy picnics, macro photography, and a peaceful break from the road.
- High-altitude hiking routes and ridgelines — A network of trails climbs from the road up to bare ridges and high pastures; the hikes are straightforward but rewarding, with panoramic views over the central Alborz. Great for day hikes or as part of longer multi-day treks if you’re

- Wildlife viewing — Persian ibex, wild sheep and raptors — Steep cliffs and rocky outcrops host ibex and wild sheep that you’ll often spot sunning themselves. Raptors (eagles and vultures) cruise the thermals above, and the reservoir attracts various water and migratory birds. Keep distance and binoculars handy.
- Alpine lakes, tarns and snowmelt streams — Aside from the main reservoir, there are smaller glacial tarns and clear streams fed by snowmelt. They make excellent rest stops and are especially beautiful in early summer when the water is icy-clear.
- Snow-capped scenery and seasonal contrasts — Lar stays snowy at higher elevations for much of the year, so the park’s mood changes dramatically with seasons—powder-white winters, lush green summers. If you like stark mountain landscapes, aim for late autumn or early spring for dramatic lighting and fewer people.
- Traditional pastures and shepherd life (yaylaks) — In summer you’ll see seasonal shepherd camps and simple stone huts on the high pastures. It’s an authentic slice of mountain life—quiet, practical, and useful for learning local routes; always ask before wandering into someone’s camp.
