Backpacking in Yam L’Yam Trail
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

You have to choose: do you hike Yam L’Yam as a three‑day, pack-on-your-back crossing, or chop it into easy day sections and sleep in guesthouses. That decision changes everything—from how wrecked your legs feel in the Upper Galilee to whether you actually enjoy the last climb. The trail runs west–east across northern Israel, from the Mediterranean near Nahariya to the Sea of Galilee, cutting through the Galilee hills and the Meron range. It’s gorgeous in a grounded way: oak forests, rocky wadis, Druze villages, and that final drop toward Kinneret that makes every blister feel worth it. It’s long enough to feel like a real crossing but not Himalayan-epic, and the waymarking is decent. Public transport to both ends is straightforward, which already puts it ahead of many Negev routes, but it’s rougher, steeper, and more sustained than most short Galilee loops, so casual walkers get humbled fast.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Mediterranean lookout — the trail often opens with a stretch that gives you an unobstructed sea view; that instant “you’re starting a proper hike” feeling is rare in Israel and sets the mood for the whole route.
  2. Stream canyons and natural pools — shady riverbeds and cliff-edged pools where locals stop to cool off; the contrast between scrubby hills and sudden fresh water is one of the trail’s best surprises (personal favorite — great for a midday dip).
  3. Ancient terraces and ruins — scattered stone walls, ruined farmsteads and occasional Byzantine/Crusader remains remind you people have been moving between these coasts for millennia; great for poking around and imagining old trade routes.

  4. Lush eastern slopes and springs — as you gain altitude toward the Galilee side the vegetation changes: springs, green gullies and wildflowers that feel more like highland country than coastal scrub, offering cooler microclimates and nicer campsites.
  5. Sea of Galilee viewpoints — the trail’s finish rewards you with wide, unobstructed views down to the lake; the sense of arriving at a totally different landscape — blue water framed by hills — is a classic payoff that sets this hike apart.
