Backpacking in Mount Arbel
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most guides sell Mount Arbel as a gentle viewpoint over the Sea of Galilee; the surprise is that the best route actually drops you down exposed cliff trails with metal rungs and loose rock that feel closer to a mini via ferrata than a casual stroll. Mount Arbel sits in northern Israel, just west of Tiberias, guarding the western rim of the lake. The main loop is short—2–4 hours depending on how far you push—but it’s punchy: steep descents, hot limestone, and a quad-burning climb back up. In return you get huge views over the water, silent caves in the cliffs, and that first icy drink in Tiberias hitting like a reward screen. Buses from Tiberias make access straightforward, which is rare compared to more remote Galilee trails, and the effort-to-view ratio easily beats many nearby walks that stay down in the valley.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Mount Arbel

  1. The cliff-edge panorama over the Sea of Galilee — The cliff drops away in a dramatic sweep, giving an unobstructed vista of the lake, Tiberias, the Golan Heights and (on clear days) Mount Hermon. It’s the kind of view that makes a short, sweaty climb feel worth it — sunrise or late afternoon light is especially rewarding.
  2. The Arbel Caves — Large rock-cut caves carved into the cliff face that were used as refuges in antiquity. Walking the rim and peering into those dark cave mouths feels properly cinematic; you can almost hear the echoes of the past. (Personal favorite — atmospheric and surprising.)
  3. Cliff-top fortress ruins — Scattered stone walls and lookout points right on the edge give you a tangible sense of how people used the high ground for defense and observation. You don’t need

  4. The steep scrambles, ladders and rim trail — Parts of the route include steep sections with handrails/metal rungs and short scrambles down the face; it’s a compact dose of adventure without requiring technical gear. Gives the hike a bite of adrenaline compared with a flat nature walk.
  5. View toward the Horns of Hittin and the surrounding landscape — From Arbel you get a clear sightline to the twin-humped Horns of Hittin and the wide plains around it, a mix of geological shapes and historical resonance. Great for photo compositions and for appreciating how the Galilee’s terrain shaped events and travel routes.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local services spike in summer. Off-peak seasons like late autumn often come with better deals, letting you stretch your budget further.

Pro-tip: Aim for early spring mornings—cool air, fewer hikers, and that first light hitting the cliffs make the climb feel like a private victory.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Mount Arbel delivers a killer view of the Sea of Galilee that makes every step worth it. The thrill of standing on that cliff, feeling the wind whip around you, is pure magic. But be ready for a steep climb; it’s not a stroll in the park. The burn in your legs is real, but trust me, the payoff is a moment you’ll want to savor.
