Backpacking in Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 20, 2026

You only realize too late that the Path of the Gods is basically a balcony over the entire Amalfi Coast, and that every bus, ferry, and beach day you do afterward feels slightly downgraded by comparison. The trail hangs above the Tyrrhenian Sea between Bomerano and Nocelle, in Campania, high over Amalfi and Positano in southern Italy. It’s not a wilderness epic; it’s a cliff-edge traverse with stone steps, farm terraces, and goat bells, about 6–7 km one way, with more quad burn than altitude gain. The views are outrageous, but the rock is dusty, the sun is brutal, and in high season you’ll be leapfrogging tour groups. Public transport makes it very doable—buses up from Amalfi or Positano—but those same buses can be chaotic and packed. Compared with other Italian coastal hikes, like Cinque Terre, this one feels wilder, steeper, and more exposed, but also more overhyped if you hit it at midday in August.

Why visitors keep coming back

The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is a must for backpackers craving a mix of challenge and reward. This trail offers a scenery-to-effort ratio that’s hard to beat. You’ll ascend through rugged cliffs, with the Mediterranean stretching out below, painting a backdrop that feels almost unreal.

Getting there is a breeze; public transport whisks you to the trailhead from towns like Bomerano or Nocelle. No need to break the bank—this hike is low cost and accessible. You can tackle it in a day or break it into segments, making it perfect for those who want to flexibly fit it into a longer backpacking route along the Amalfi Coast.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. Panoramic view of Positano, Capri and the Amalfi coastline — The trail never stops rewarding you with postcard-perfect stretches of sea and pastel houses clinging to cliffs. That sweep of water with Capri as a focal point is the kind of view you’ll keep stopping for, phone out, even if you swore you’d ”just hike.” (Personal favorite.)
  2. Ridge walking on the Lattari Mountains — You’re walking along a real ridge here, with honest exposure and long sightlines that make the trail feel airy and epic. It’s not a forest crawl; it’s an open, ridge-top hike that gives a constant sense of where you are — high above the coast, with the sky and sea competing for attention.
  3. Classic mule tracks and ancient stone steps — Parts of the Sentiero degli Dei are carved into the rock and paved with age-worn steps.

  3. Classic mule tracks and ancient stone steps — Parts of the Sentiero degli Dei are carved into the rock and paved with age-worn steps. Those old paths tell you this is a route used by locals for generations, not a manufactured “scenic loop,” and they give the hike a real, lived-in history.
  4. Terraced farmland and lemon groves — The patchwork terraces and citrus-scented slopes are uniquely Amalfi: human-made landscapes stacked into the cliffs. It’s both pretty and oddly humbling to see how people shaped this coastline to grow food — you’ll pass tiny plots, dry-stone walls, and the occasional working farm.
  5. Mediterranean flora, butterflies and cliff birds — Expect fragrant herbs, scrubby maquis, bursts of wildflowers and lizards on the rocks. Raptors and other cliff-dwelling birds are common; the biodiversity is compact but intense, because everything grows right up to that cliff edge.

  • Crowds: Summer draws throngs, turning the path into a slow shuffle. Shoulder seasons thin the crowds, letting you own the trail and savor the silence between the cliffs and sea.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring blooms and autumn harvests color the landscape, adding sensory layers to the hike. Summer’s festivals in nearby towns can be a bonus or a distraction, depending on your vibe.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons saves cash and spares you from the tourist crush, letting you invest in a cold beer at the trail’s end instead.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail early in shoulder seasons to catch the sunrise lighting up the Amalfi coast—nothing beats that first step bathed in golden light.

The Path of the Gods is a breathtaking dance along cliffs that drop into the turquoise sea. You’ll feel the thrill of every step, the wind whipping through your hair, and the reward of that panoramic view at the end is pure magic. Just know, the trail can get crowded, especially in peak season. Embrace the hustle, but if solitude is your jam, aim for early mornings or late afternoons to savor the serenity.
