Backpacking in Reach Falls
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 6, 2026

Cold river water slaps your shins as you edge upstream, fingers scraping smooth limestone, the roar of the falls getting louder until mist hits your face and you taste clean, mineral-heavy spray. That’s Reach Falls, tucked in the lush hills of eastern Portland parish on Jamaica’s quieter side. The “hike” here is more of a river scramble than a mountain slog: short, playful, and scenic, with jade pools, overhanging roots, and rock ledges you can slide from if you’re game. It’s not hard, but the wet rocks demand balance and shoes with grip. Getting to the trailhead by public transport takes patience—route taxis and a bit of negotiation—so it feels more local than the polished Dunn’s River scene. Compared to longer treks in the Blue Mountains, Reach Falls trades big summit views for intimate jungle, cold water, and pure, kid-like fun.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Main Cascade & Emerald Pool — The heart of Reach Falls: a low, curtain-like waterfall that pours into a wide, emerald-green pool you can wade or swim in. Unlike big, roaring plunges, this one feels intimate and safe—great for floating, photos, and cooling off without a cliff-jump thrill-seekers crowd.
  2. The Grotto (swim-through cave) — A narrow cave tucked behind the falls where you can sit in the spray and hear the water thundering above. The light, mossy walls and echo make it feel like a secret room carved into the river; personal favorite for the photo ops and the slightly otherworldly silence once you step inside.

  3. Natural Ledges & Mini-Jacuzzis — The river here has carved smooth rock shelves and little plunge pools that act like natural jacuzzis and lazy channels. Scrambling between them and letting the current massage your feet is one of those small, memorable trail pleasures you won’t get at a paved city park.
  4. Bamboo Corridor & Rainforest Canopy — The short hike to the falls threads through dense bamboo stands, tree ferns, and shady rainforest pockets. It’s narrow and rooty in parts, which makes the approach feel adventurous and keeps you close to birdlife, frogs, and thick tropical greenery the whole way.
  5. Local Guides & Village Vibe — Reach has a low-key, community-run feel: local guides point out hidden swim spots, warn about slippery rocks, and share folklore about the place. That human element—real people, stories, and a modest entrance fee that supports them—makes the hike feel more like visiting than just ticking off a vista.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: The dry season from December to April is your best bet—less mud, fewer slippery rocks, and clearer water for swimming. The wet season (May to November) brings heavy rains that can swell the falls and make trails treacherous.

  • Temperature: Expect highs around 28-32°C (82-90°F) year-round, with nights cooling to 22-24°C (72-75°F). The heat is steady, so early mornings or late afternoons are prime for hiking without frying under the sun.

  • Daylight Hours: Jamaica offers roughly 11-12 hours of daylight year-round. Arrive early to maximize your trek and soak in the falls before the light fades.

  • Crowds: Peak tourist season (December to April) means more visitors, especially on weekends. For a quieter experience, aim for weekdays in the shoulder months of November or May.

  • Seasonal Activities: The dry season aligns with local festivals and events, adding cultural spice if you time it right. Wet months slow down activities but bring lush greenery that’s a feast for the eyes.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and tours spike during the dry season and holidays. Booking in the shoulder months can save you cash without sacrificing the experience.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail just after dawn in late November or early May—cool air, fewer people, and the falls roaring with fresh rainwater make every step worth it.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Reach Falls is a slice of paradise. The thrill of navigating the rocky trails and plunging into those turquoise pools is pure joy. You’ll feel alive. But here’s the catch: it can get crowded, especially on weekends. If you’re seeking solitude, aim for a weekday visit. Still, the reward of a refreshing swim after the hike? Totally worth it. Just remember to pack your patience along with your swimsuit.
