Backpacking in Bamboo Beach Club
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026

Bamboo Beach is best known for its drumming, which carries across the sand from the club's music area and gives the place its pulse. The beach sits on Jamaica's north coast near Rio Bueno in Trelawny, a short ride from Falmouth. It is a private day-pass club, so the sand stays tidy and the chairs are included in the entry fee. That also means it is not a wild, empty cove, and the crowd thickens when cruise groups arrive. I still hear the hollow thump of hand drums mixing with blender noise from the bar. Come for easy swimming, cocktails and music. Skip it if you want solitude or a shoestring day. The last thing you see walking out is the rows of chairs lined along the shore.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #11 beach in Jamaica
What makes this beach worth visiting

Bamboo Beach earns its stop because it makes a lazy day simple. You pay one day-pass entry fee of about US$11 to 15, and the beach chair is included, so you are not haggling over loungers or hunting for a spot. The setting is calm, the sand is raked, and the water is easy for floating about. The second draw is the sound. Live drumming and music keep the place social without turning it into a club, and it is easy to start chatting with the people at the next chairs. It also fits a coastal route nicely. Falmouth is about 15 minutes away, so you can slot a few hours here between sightseeing stops on the Trelawny coast and still reach your bed before dark. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and a thirst for rum punch.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Day-pass beach and chairs: The main event is the private stretch of sand with a beach chair included in your entry. It is tidy and relaxed, and a good place to spend a long afternoon.
  2. Drumming sessions: Hand drums and live music set the mood here. Stand near the music area for a few songs, because the rhythm is the beach's signature.
  3. Swimming in the calm shallows: The water by the shore is gentle enough for floating and paddling. It suits first-timers and anyone who wants a dip without fighting waves.
  4. Cocktails at the beach bar: Rum-based drinks arrive in the sun, and ordering one after a swim is the classic routine. Pace yourself, because the heat makes them go down fast.
  5. Rio Bueno shoreline stroll: Beyond the club, the coast near Rio Bueno offers a quiet look at a smaller harbor town and local

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Dry Season (December to April): Best weather, with days around 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F), cooler nights near 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F), and low humidity. Cruise ships and winter visitors push crowds and prices up, especially in holiday weeks.
  • Shoulder Months (May to June, November): Warm sea, fewer people, and some short rain bursts. Highs reach 30 to 32°C (86 to 90°F).
  • Wet and Hurricane Season (July to October): Hot, humid days of 31 to 33°C (88 to 91°F) with heavy afternoon downpours and the greatest storm risk from August to October. Day-pass crowds thin and rooms are cheapest.
Arrive when the club opens on a non-cruise day to claim a chair with less competition.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Falmouth, about 15 minutes away, is the most practical area to sleep if you want Bamboo Beach as a day outing. It has the widest range of budget guesthouses and homestays, local jerk and patty stands, and easy shared taxis along the coast road. Staying here also lets you reach Martha Brae rafting and Good Hope Estate without a long transfer.

Rio Bueno, the small fishing village right next to the beach, suits travelers who want quiet. Options are few, mostly simple guesthouses and rentals, and nightlife is minimal, so you will be cooking or eating at local spots.

Rio Bueno, the small fishing village right next to the beach, suits travelers who want quiet. Options are few, mostly simple guesthouses and rentals, and nightlife is minimal, so you will be cooking or eating at local spots.

Trelawny’s coast around Duncans is another low-key choice with villa rooms and private rentals, better in a pair or small group than solo. For a social hostel scene, Montego Bay, roughly 45 minutes to an hour east, is the stronger bet, and you can come over for the day.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Bamboo Beach is a managed private club, so the setting is calmer and more controlled than a public beach. The north coast water here is generally gentle, without strong rips, and the sea is usually clear and warm. Check the day’s conditions with staff after storms or heavy rain, when waves and murk can increase. Reef and sea urchins can sit near rocky edges, so water shoes help if you wander from the swimming area. The sun is strong all year, and shade from the chair only goes so far, so reapply sunscreen after swimming. Cocktails and heat add up quickly, so drink water between rounds. Lockers or staff-watched spots are better than leaving items unattended on your chair.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Bamboo Beach is on the north coast near Rio Bueno in Trelawny, about 15 minutes by car from Falmouth. From Montego Bay it takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road, and a private taxi typically costs US$40 to 70 each way. Route taxis run along the coast highway to Rio Bueno, but you will still need a short ride to the entrance.
Bamboo Beach is best for relaxed swimming, since the water is usually calm, warm and clear, and the club has chairs and bar service. It is not a surf spot because waves are small along this stretch. Snorkeling is possible near the reef edges if you bring your own gear and water shoes, but it is a lounging beach first.
Bamboo Beach is not free, because it is a private day-pass beach club. Entry is about US$11 to 15 and includes a beach chair. Food and cocktails cost extra, and you should budget another US$15 to 30 for a meal and a few drinks, with music and drumming on site.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Bamboo Beach trips go wrong when people arrive late, pay the fee and then rush the day around a cruise-ship crowd. I would get there early, claim a chair near the music, and stay through the afternoon drumming instead of squeezing it between other stops.
