It’s a small, cool, high-altitude pocket inside the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, up in the hills above Gordon Town and Irish Town in eastern Jamaica. For backpackers, Holywell is a trade: you give up big, dramatic peaks for easy-access forest, short but honest hikes, and a break from coastal heat. Trails are well-marked, the air smells of pine and wet earth, and you’ll see birds long before you see other travelers, especially on weekdays. The downside is logistics: steep, slow roads, limited public transport, and an entrance fee that feels a bit high if you only stay an hour. Camping and basic cabins are available but not ultra-cheap. Compared with the deeper Blue Mountain routes, Holywell is tamer, more managed, less epic—but far more realistic for a half-day escape on a backpacker budget.
