Backpacking in Ajloun Forest Reserve
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people only realize on the way out that Ajloun Forest Reserve is where you finally get shade, cool air, and actual trees after days of Jordanian rock and desert. It sits in the hills of northern Jordan, near the town of Ajloun, about an hour and a half by road from Amman. For backpackers, it’s a compact, well-managed reserve with marked trails, rolling oak forests, and a decent chance of spotting wild boar, birds of prey, and the odd fox. Hiking is easy to moderate, not epic, and the scenery is more “Mediterranean woodland” than postcard drama. Access is straightforward by car or bus-plus-taxi, but entrance fees and on-site camping or cabins are pricier than you’d expect for a short stay. Compared with Dana or Mujib, Ajloun is gentler, cooler, less spectacular, but far less exhausting and logistically simpler.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  • Oak-dominated Mediterranean woodlands — The park’s backbone: dense stands of evergreen oaks and shrubs that feel unexpectedly green for Jordan. Cool shade, crunchy leaf litter and that piney-woody smell make it hypnotically peaceful. (Personal favorite.)
  • Ridge viewpoints and panoramas — Short climbs put you on ridgelines with wide views over the surrounding hills and the Jordan Valley beyond. Sunsets here hit hard; good for photos or just sitting and doing nothing for a while.
  • Spring wildflower carpets — Come April-May and patches open into carpets of seasonal flowers and aromatic herbs. Small, bright bursts of color against the oak canopy — great for a slow, nose-to-ground walk.

  • Birdwatching and migration stopovers — The reserve sits on a migratory route, so expect a steady turnover of warblers, flycatchers and raptors in season. Quiet viewpoints and early mornings are the best bets for decent sightings without a guide.
  • Mammal signs and shy wildlife — You won’t always see them, but tracks, calls and the occasional flash of movement tell the story: foxes, wild boar and a bunch of small mammals use these woods. Dawn and dusk are the prime times if you want a chance.
  • Hiking trail network and short loops — Several marked trails suit everything from a relaxed 30-minute loop to half-day hikes. Trails wind through different microhabitats, so you get variety without having to commit to a brutal trek.
  • Seasonal streams, gullies and old terraces — After winter rains small streams and green gullies come alive; you’ll also notice traditional stone terraces and walls that give the landscape a lived-in, historic feel.
