Most summaries sell the Balkan Trail as some polished, waymarked “grand route,” but on the Kosovo section you’re often following faint shepherd paths and half-faded paint blazes, which makes it feel more like an old smugglers’ line than a packaged trek. In Kosovo it runs through the Sharr Mountains in the south, roughly between Brezovicë and the high border ridges toward North Macedonia, skirting ski lifts, meadows, and big, broken limestone. The scenery swings fast: spruce forest, open ridgeline, then loose, dusty switchbacks that chew up your legs. It’s long enough to feel like a real undertaking but not an epic thru-hike, with days that push into solid intermediate-to-tough territory if you carry full gear. Buses to Brezovicë and nearby villages make the start reasonably reachable, more so than some Accursed Mountains routes, but it’s wilder and less polished than the better-known Peaks of the Balkans, which is exactly why I liked it.
