Backpacking in Chouwen Lake
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 6, 2026

Most people only realize after they arrive at Chouwen Lake that you can swim there, properly and blissfully, so packing a swimsuit and sandals turns a “nice hike” into a full-body reset. Chouwen Lake sits above the Nahr Ibrahim valley in the Jbeil district of Lebanon, a couple of hours from Beirut if traffic behaves. The trail drops steadily through pine forest and rocky switchbacks to a shockingly blue reservoir, with cliffy walls and cold, clean water that rewards every sweaty step. It’s short-to-medium length, doable in half a day, but the climb back up bites hard in the sun and the path can be slippery with loose gravel. Public transport gets you only partway; you usually need a service taxi or ride from the main road, and compared with Tannourine or Qadisha, it’s easier technically but more crowded and less wild.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Chouwen Lake

  1. The mirror-like lake at dawn — Early mornings turn the water into glass: mountain peaks and clouds reflected perfectly, with low-angle light that makes colors pop. It’s the kind of quiet, photogenic scene you don’t get on noisy lowland trails.
  2. Pockets of Lebanon cedar and oak — Small stands of Cedrus libani and mixed oaks ring parts of the shore, giving shaded walking, that resinous cedar smell, and a real sense of place — hikers get the classic Lebanese mountain vibe without the crowds at the big cedar reserves.
  3. The ridge viewpoint (360° sweep) — A short scramble from the trail opens to a broad panorama: layered mountain folds, distant sea glimpses on clear days, and dramatic cliffs. It’s the big-picture payoff of the hike — great for timing sunset or a snack break.

  4. Seasonal streams and mossy cascades — Runoff and karst springs feed the lake, creating little waterfalls and cool plunge pools in spring and after rains. Those moist microhabitats bring frogs, butterflies, and a refreshing break that feels a world away from dusty trails.
  5. Stone terraces and the mountain village touch — Old stone houses, terraced fields and occasional shepherds give the route a lived-in, cultural layer. It’s not just scenery — you’ll see traditional land use, maybe smell baking bread, and get a glimpse of daily mountain life most other hikes skip.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Chouwen Lake offers a rewarding hike, but it’s not without its quirks. The trail can be steep in sections, demanding your focus and a solid pair of boots. Navigation is straightforward, but keep an eye on trail markers; they can be sporadic.

Weather can shift quickly, especially in spring and fall. Layer up, and be ready for a chill even if the sun is shining. The altitude isn’t extreme, but you’ll feel the burn in your legs as you climb.

Wildlife is part of the experience. You might spot a goat or two, but keep your distance. Respect their space, and they’ll respect yours.

Pack enough water; the trail can be dry, and a refill isn’t guaranteed until you reach the lake. Timing is key—start early to beat the heat and enjoy the tranquility before the crowds arrive. Embrace the challenge; the view at the lake is worth every step.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Chouwen Lake is a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively. The hike down is a workout, but that first glimpse of the turquoise water makes every step worth it. Bring a picnic; the vibe is relaxed, and you’ll want to linger. Just a heads-up: the trail can get slippery, especially after rain, so tread carefully. The best surprise? The locals are friendly and often share stories that make you feel like part of the community. Don’t rush; soak it all in.
