Backpacking in Tannourine Cedar Forest Reserve Trail
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 26, 2026

You only realize after you go that Tannourine Cedar Forest Reserve is one of the few Lebanese mountain hikes where you can push hard on trail all day and still be back in Beirut for dinner without feeling wrecked by traffic or logistics. The trail sits above the town of Tannourine, in the Tannourine Cedar Forest Nature Reserve in the northern Mount Lebanon range, high and cool when the coast is baking. The hike itself is a rolling network of waymarked loops through dense ancient cedars and exposed limestone ridges, with big views into the Tannourine valley and, on clear days, out toward the Mediterranean. Distances are flexible, but expect a solid half-day if you link routes; climbs are short yet punchy, more moderate than the brutal ascents of Qadisha or the high Bcharre peaks, and public transport drops you in Tannourine then leaves you hustling for a taxi to the gate.

Discover everything you want to know in the 📖 Lebanon Travel Guide.
Best time to go: March - May, September - November
Duration: 5 hours

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. Baatara (Balaa) Gorge / Three Bridges — A surreal limestone sinkhole with three natural stone arches where a waterfall plunges through; best after winter rains when the falls are full. It’s the kind of geological scene you don’t see every day — dramatic, photogenic, and slightly unreal up close.
  2. Ancient Cedar Groves — Dense stands of Cedrus libani, some gnarled and centuries-old, give the trail its soul. The smell of resin, the cathedral-like trunks and long patches of cool shade make this cedar forest stand out from ordinary mountain woods.
  3. High Cliff Viewpoints — Several exposed overlooks drop away into deep valleys and ridgelines, offering wide panoramas that can include distant sea haze on clear days. Great for sunrise or a late-afternoon sit when the light sculpts the landscape.

  4. Wildflowers and Birdlife — Spring brings carpets of native wildflowers and a good chance to spot mountain songbirds and raptors riding thermals. It’s quieter and wilder than busier Lebanese trails, so encounters with wildlife feel more authentic.
  5. Stone Villages and Mountain Culture — Small, traditional villages and terraced fields dot the route or its approaches, giving you a chance to see rural mountain life — shepherds, stone architecture, and local hospitality. Those human touches remind you this isn’t just a nature walk but a lived landscape.

  • Crowds: Spring and fall attract local hikers and nature lovers but avoid the summer rush when tourists flock to cooler mountain spots. Winter sees fewer visitors but tougher trail conditions.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring bursts with wildflowers and bird activity, enriching the hike’s sensory payoff. Autumn paints the cedars in warm hues, a visual reward for the climb. Summer and winter lack this vibrancy.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local services near Tannourine see moderate price hikes in summer due to peak tourism. Spring and fall offer better value with fewer crowds and steady service availability.

Pro-tip: Aim for late April or early October—temperatures are just right, trails are lively but not packed, and the forest’s colors and scents hit their peak.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The Tannourine Cedar Forest Reserve Trail is a rewarding trek, but it demands respect. Weather can shift quickly; mornings might start crisp, but by noon, the sun can blaze. Dress in layers and pack a light rain jacket just in case. The terrain is mostly well-maintained, but expect some steep sections that will get your heart racing. Watch your footing on rocky paths, especially after rain when they can be slippery.

Wildlife is part of the experience. You might spot a shy deer or hear the rustle of birds overhead. Keep your distance and don’t feed them; it’s about coexistence, not intrusion.

Timing is key. Start early to avoid the heat and enjoy the tranquility. Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up. Embrace the challenge, and the views will reward your effort.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

The Tannourine Cedar Forest Reserve Trail is a breath of fresh air—literally. You’ll feel the crunch of pine needles underfoot and the cool shade wrapping around you like a hug. The best surprise? Stumbling upon a clearing where the sun breaks through, illuminating ancient cedars like nature’s cathedral. Just a heads-up: the trail can get steep and rocky, so keep your footing. But trust me, that first cold drink at the end will taste like victory.
