Backpacking in Antoinette Tubman Stadium
👌 Worth visitingattraction ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Antoinette Tubman Stadium is a football ground named for a first lady, and it is not the national stadium, a title that belongs to the much bigger SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville. You’ll find it in Congo Town, in Liberia’s capital Monrovia, on the city’s peninsula side. Expect red dust, hot concrete, vendors hawking water from basins and a drum beating from the terraces. It is modest, worn and unpolished, with no museum polish and no tours. Matchdays are why you come, and entry is cheap, so the value is solid. Crowds are loud but manageable, and the taxi ride from central Monrovia is short. Football fans and people who like local color will love it. Anyone wanting monuments or architecture will find too little.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #8 attraction in Liberia
What makes this attraction worth visiting

Antoinette Tubman Stadium gives you Liberian football at street level, which is a better window into Monrovia than most museums. A Liberian Premier League matchday puts you among supporters of clubs like Mighty Barrolle and LISCR, with chants, drums and sharp commentary from the stands that no guidebook captures. The ground sits in Congo Town, a residential and commercial neighborhood, so the walk in and out shows you ordinary city life along with the game. It also carries the name of Antoinette Tubman, wife of President William V.S. Tubman, which ties a sports field to the long era of Tubman rule. For a backpacker on a Monrovia stopover, it is an easy, cheap evening out that puts you next to locals instead of other travelers.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. A Liberian Premier League match: the main draw. Local clubs play here in front of passionate home crowds, and the standard is raw but spirited.
  2. The main grandstand: the best seats for seeing the whole pitch and the crowd, with shade from the sun and the easiest view of the game.
  3. The supporters’ terraces: this is where the drums, whistles and chanting come from. Stand here if you want noise and energy over comfort.
  4. The pitch and surrounding track area: worth a look for its condition and the way local players adapt to a hard, uneven surface in the heat.
  5. Congo Town stadium surroundings: before and after games, vendors sell snacks and cold drinks outside, and fans debate results in the street, a lively scene to wander through.

Sinkor has the densest cluster of budget guesthouses, cheap eateries, ATMs and shared taxis, and it is where most foreign volunteers and independent travelers end up. You can walk to bars and restaurants after dark in the busier stretches, though a taxi home is smarter once the streets empty out. Dorm beds and basic private rooms are available here at lower prices than in the central business district.

Congo Town itself is quieter and more residential, with fewer budget options but a calmer feel and easy access to the stadium on foot. Central Monrovia is noisier, grittier and less relaxed for a late arrival. Beach areas such as Mamba Point cost noticeably more and suit a splurge night.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Two to three hours covers a match, and a short walk-in without an event takes under an hour. Antoinette Tubman Stadium is in Monrovia’s Congo Town area, so pair it with a half day in Sinkor or at Providence Island. Arrive about an hour before kickoff for security checks and seating.
Worth it for a live match, since tickets run roughly US$2 to 10 and the crowd supplies most of the atmosphere. Antoinette Tubman Stadium is a modest venue, so there is little to see on an empty day. Check fixtures with local fans or your guesthouse before heading out.
Take a taxi or shared cab from central Monrovia or Sinkor, about 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Antoinette Tubman Stadium lies in Congo Town, and a private drop costs roughly US$3 to 8 while shared rides cost less. From Roberts International Airport it is about an hour or more by road, around 55 km (34 miles).

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Antoinette Tubman Stadium is best on a dry-season weekend afternoon, when the heat eases and the crowd fills the terraces. Go for a late-afternoon kickoff, wear a hat and bring small bills for snacks. I would skip the rainy months, since a wet pitch and mud can wreck the day.
