Backpacking in Lambir Hills
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 18, 2026

Your first real decision at Lambir Hills is simple but important: do you treat it as a quick half‑day waterfall stop from Miri, or commit to a full day (or overnight) of sweaty, hilly jungle hiking. That choice decides whether you just pay the entrance fee, snap a few photos, and leave, or actually see why this small park in northern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, has a reputation among biologists for absurdly rich lowland rainforest. For backpackers, Lambir is a compact, steamy, waterfall-heavy alternative to the bigger-name parks like Gunung Mulu or Niah. Trails are well-marked but steeper than they look on the map, leeches show up after rain, and public transport is limited enough that most people end up sharing a Grab or taxi from Miri. Camping and basic chalets exist but feel underused and a bit tired; I’ve had the place almost to myself on weekdays, which is great for quiet jungle time but bad if you’re hoping for a social trailhead scene. Compared with Mulu’s caves and Niah’s archaeology, Lambir is cheaper, closer to town, and more about sweaty day hikes, birds, and waterfalls than big-ticket “wow” moments, so it rewards patient walkers more than checklist collectors.

  • Birdwatching and wildlife spotting — Early mornings bring noisy, colorful birdlife (including hornbills and sunbirds), while trails often reveal macaques, monitor lizards, frogs and heaps of butterflies. Bring binoculars and patience.
  • Short loop trails and river crossings — The park has several well-marked short and medium loops that thread streams, little rapids and forest interiors — ideal if you want jungle time without committing to a full-day trek.
  • Night walks — Take a guided night walk to find tree frogs, nocturnal insects, geckos and the odd owl. Completely different mood from daytime; bring a headlamp and listen more than you look.
  • Research station and forest-plot area — The on-site research plot has made Lambir famous among ecologists; signs and staff sometimes share insights about the forest’s dynamics, rare plants and conservation work — good for curious minds who want context beyond “pretty trees.”
