- Crater with the Twin Lakes (Laguna del Sol y Laguna de la Luna) — The park’s showpiece: two deep blue crater lakes sitting inside the volcanic caldera. They’re surreal up close and change color with the light; great for photos, quiet reflection, and that classic “how did this even form?” moment. (Personal favorite.)
- Crater rim / summit hike — A relatively short but steep walk around the crater rim gives sweeping panoramas of the lakes below and, on clear days, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl in the distance. Thin air makes it feel harder than it looks—go slow, drink water, and don’t be surprised if you need extra breath breaks.

- Alpine meadows and wildflowers — In summer the crater slopes fill with low, colorful flowers and grasses that carpet the high-elevation landscape. It’s a quieter, softer side of the volcano that contrasts nicely with the rocky rim.
- Pine and oyamel fir forests — Lower slopes are cloaked in dense pine and oyamel (fir) woods that smell amazing and host lots of birds. These forests are cool and shady—nice for a restorative detour after the exposed crater.
- Volcanic geology and lava fields — Jagged lava flows, ash deposits and glacial moraines tell the mountain’s violent history. The textures and rock colors make for interesting short walks and are a good playground for geology-curious travelers.
- Wildlife and birdwatching — You’ll likely spot small mammals (rabbits, occasional foxes), and a good range of high-altitude birds and raptors. It’s not jungle-dense, but the open views make wildlife easier to see if you move quietly.
- Seasonal snow and sunrise/sunset views — In winter the crater often wears a snow cap, and dawn/dusk light here is dramatic—golden edges on the lakes and long shadows across the rim. If you can catch a sunrise here, it’s worth the early wake-up.
