Backpacking in Peaks of the Balkan trail
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 12, 2026

Most people only realize halfway through that the real advantage of the Peaks of the Balkans is how empty it feels for such big-mountain scenery—you’re walking through terrain that looks like the Alps, but you still share trails with shepherds more than tour groups. On the Montenegrin side, the route cuts through the Prokletije range in the far northeast, around Plav and Gusinje, right up against Albania and Kosovo. The hiking is serious: long days, big elevation, and a loop that can chew up 10+ days if you commit to the full circuit. Public transport gets you to Plav or Gusinje with a bit of Balkan bus chaos, but it’s doable without a car. Compared to Durmitor’s polished day hikes, this feels wilder, rougher underfoot, and more rewarding when you finally drop your pack in a village and someone hands you a cold beer and hot burek.

  • Plav Lake (Plavsko jezero) — a glassy glacial lake sitting in a wide mountain bowl; dawn reflections of the surrounding peaks are unreal, there’s a cheap guesthouse or two on the shore, and a quick dip here after a long day is a proper reward few other long-distance trails offer.
  • Grebaje Valley — a narrow, U-shaped alpine valley with sheer rock walls, scattered katun (shepherd) huts and carpets of wildflowers in summer; it feels raw and compact — like a miniature Dolomites — and you’re likely to spot grazing cattle, chamois or a hunting golden eagle.
  • Zla Kolata ridge & Prokletije summits — jagged, knife-edge ridgelines and panoramic viewpoints toward Albania and Kosovo; Zla Kolata is Montenegro’s highest point (about 2,534 m) and the rough, exposed terrain up here is far more dramatic

  • Gusinje & Vusanje villages — real mountain towns where the trail drops into daily life: Ottoman-era lanes, taverns serving steaming soups, homemade cheese and rakija, and family-run rooms; the local hospitality and mixed Albanian/Montenegrin culture add a human layer you won’t get on many alpine routes.
  • High border passes and remote singletrack — the Peaks of the Balkans is special because you walk the borderlands: high passes that move you between countries, long stretches with almost no people, brutal silence at night and ridiculous starfields — a rare combo of international flavor and genuine solitude.
