Backpacking in Biogradska Gora
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 1, 2026

Most people assume Biogradska Gora is just “the other Durmitor” or a quick lake photo stop off the highway. It isn’t. It’s a compact, old-growth forest reserve in northern Montenegro, between Kolašin and Mojkovac, wrapped around Biogradsko Lake and a cluster of quiet mountain villages. For backpackers, the pros are clear: dense, moody forest trails, easy lake circuits, longer ridge hikes up to peaks like Crna Glava, decent wildlife spotting if you’re patient, and a calmer feel than Durmitor or Prokletije. Access is straightforward by road, the entrance fee is modest, and you can camp at the official lakeside campground or find simple rooms in Kolašin. The cons: the lakefront boardwalk gets bus-busy in high season, waymarked trails are fewer and less dramatic than Durmitor’s, and public transport timing can be awkward. Overall the vibe is slower, softer, more about forest and silence than big-mountain hero shots.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Biogradsko Lake — A classic glacial lake ringed by old trees; glassy water that reflects the forest and mountains. The short loop trail around it is perfect for a relaxed hour, and on calm mornings the reflections are unreal for photos or a quiet sit with coffee.
  • Primeval (Virgin) Forest — One of Europe’s few remaining untouched beech-fir woods. Wander under trunks hundreds of years old, watch mossy carpets and fallen giants slowly recycling themselves, and feel how different an ancient forest’s silence is from a planted one.
  • Bjelasica Ridges & Panoramic Views — Hike up from the park into Bjelasica’s ridgelines for sweeping mountain views. On a clear day you get layered ranges and big sky — good routes for sunrise or a full-day trek if you like wide, open alpine scenery.

  • Well-marked Hiking Loops — Trails here suit everyone: the easy Biogradsko Lake circuit, half-day walks through the forest, and longer ridge routes for serious hikers. Signs are decent; pack water and shoes with grip and you’ll find options from chill to challenging.
  • Wildlife & Birdwatching — The park shelters large mammals and a healthy bird community. Keep an eye out (from a safe distance) for deer or tracks of larger carnivores, and scan treetops and cliffs for raptors. Dawn and dusk are the best times to catch animal activity.
  • Alpine Meadows and Katuns (summer pastures) — In summer the high meadows bloom with wildflowers and traditional katun huts appear, with shepherds making cheese. It’s an easy way to mix landscape hiking with small, human-scale culture.
  • Streams, Small Waterfalls & Wetlands — Hidden brooks and mossy cascades feed the lake and make lovely picnic or photo stops. There are also boggy hollows and reeds that add variety to the forest—bring waterproof shoes if you plan to explore off the main paths.
