Backpacking in Lučice beach
👍 Recommendedbeach ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 14, 2026

You know that moment when you finally reach a beach and realize there’s nowhere decent to pitch a towel in the shade? Lučice quietly solves that with its pine forest backdrop, where you can retreat from the sun without paying for a sunbed you’ll barely use. It’s a small bay just south of Petrovac, on Montenegro’s central coast, an easy downhill walk from town and a slightly sweatier uphill return that will remind you how much you overpacked.

For backpackers, Lučice is a solid “yes, but know what you’re getting.” The water is clear, usually calm, great for lazy swims and basic snorkel peeks around the rocks, not for surf or serious diving. It’s cleaner and more relaxed than Petrovac’s main beach, but it does fill with families and day-trippers in high season, plus the usual sunbed grid. Still, you can usually find a free patch of sand, a cheap-ish bakery snack or pizza slice nearby, and a couple of guesthouses up the hill that undercut Budva’s prices. Compared with Budva’s chaos or Sveti Stefan’s paywall energy, Lučice feels like the middle ground: not wild or remote, but a practical, good-value base if you want sea time without selling your soul to the party crowd.

Lučice Beach in Montenegro is one of those spots that backpackers can’t resist, and for good reason. First off, the laid-back atmosphere is like a warm hug after a long trek. You can kick off your shoes, sink your toes into the sand, and just breathe.

  • Snorkel the rock gardens — The cove is ringed by rocky outcrops instead of a long sandy shelf, so you can step in and immediately reach clear, shallow reefs full of small fish and sea urchins; great for close-up snorkelling without needing a boat or long swim. Take a mask, fins and reef-safe sunscreen and you’ll see more than the usual pebbles.
  • Cliff-and-platform jumps — Small stone ledges and natural platforms make for a variety of jump heights with clear drop zones below, so it’s a mini-adventure spot for anyone who likes a quick adrenalin hit. Always scout the water first (depths change with tide) and follow local jump etiquette — it’s small, so give people space.

  • Sunset on the rocky terrace — Unlike broad, flat beaches, Lučice has little natural terraces and jutting rocks that catch the last light beautifully; people drift here later in the day to watch the horizon glow with fewer crowds than the bigger beaches nearby. It’s an especially chill place for photos or a slow drink as the sun slips away.
  • Paddle out to tiny coves and sea-shelf snorkel spots — The small bay layout makes it ideal for a short SUP or kayak trip to explore nearby mini-coves and shallow caves that are otherwise hard to reach from shore. Ten minutes of paddling can feel like discovering a private pocket of coastline, so bring or rent light gear if you want to explore past the swim line.
  • Moonlit swims and low-key evening vibes — Lučice doesn’t have big nightclub energy, but in summer it turns into a mellow night spot: think moonlit swims, small acoustic gatherings and people lingering on the rocks. It’s more about relaxed, local atmosphere and starry calm than neon nightlife — perfect if you’re into quiet nights after a full day of exploring.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Topic: Weather – Late May through early September is your sweet spot. Expect sun-drenched days with minimal rain. Early summer mornings can still be a bit brisk, around 18°C (64°F), but by July and August, it’s a solid 28-30°C (82-86°F), perfect for beach lounging without melting into the sand.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours – Summer days stretch long, giving you up to 15 hours of daylight in June. That means more time to soak up the sun or chase the last light with a cold drink in hand. Off-season, the days shrink fast, and the beach vibe dims accordingly.

  • Topic: Crowds – July and August bring the inevitable crush. If you like elbow room, aim for June or September. The beach is lively but not a sardine tin, and you’ll snag better spots without the usual tourist circus.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Summer is when Lučice buzzes with water sports, beach bars, and local festivals. Outside these months, it’s quieter, which is great if you want peace but less fun if you crave action.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Peak season means peak prices. Accommodation and food costs can double compared to shoulder months. If you’re backpacking on a budget, June and September offer a better bang for your buck without sacrificing the experience.

Pro-tip: Hit Lučice in early June or late September to dodge crowds, enjoy near-perfect weather, and keep your wallet happier—because nobody wants to pay premium for a sunburn and a fight over a beach chair.

Another option is to camp near the beach. Yes, you’ll have to deal with the occasional seagull stealing your snacks, but waking up to the sound of waves is worth it. Just remember to pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

Avoid the tourist traps in nearby towns; they’re like that friend who always shows up uninvited. Stick to Petrovac for a genuine experience that balances socializing and serenity.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Lučice Beach in Montenegro is a slice of paradise, but like any good adventure, it comes with its quirks. The swimming conditions are generally friendly, with gentle waves that won’t have you wrestling with the ocean. Just keep an eye out for the occasional current; it’s not a raging river, but it can surprise you if you’re not paying attention.

As for marine life, you’re more likely to encounter a friendly ray than a shark. Jellyfish can pop up, especially in warmer months, so a quick glance at the water before diving in is wise.

Enjoy the sun, the sea, and the laid-back vibe!

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Lučice beach

Lučice Beach is a slice of paradise where the turquoise water feels like a warm hug. Seriously, it’s worth the trek just to float in that bliss. But let’s be real: getting there involves a winding road that might make your stomach do somersaults. If you can handle a little car sickness for a day of sun-soaked joy, you’ll find it’s a trade worth making. Just pack some ginger candy for the ride.
