Backpacking in Mardi Himal Trek
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 9, 2026

Most people only realize on day two that Mardi Himal quietly hands you Annapurna views you’d pay EBC prices for, but in half the time and with a fraction of the crowds. Tucked above Pokhara on the Annapurna side of central Nepal, this trek climbs fast from mossy forest to knife-edge ridge, where Machhapuchhre feels close enough to touch. It’s short by Himalayan standards, usually 4–5 trekking days, but the altitude gain is punchy and the pre-dawn push to Mardi High Viewpoint will have your lungs swearing. Buses and jeeps from Pokhara make the trailheads at Kande or Phedi easy and cheap to reach, far simpler than remote routes. Compared with Poon Hill it’s tougher and wilder; compared with Annapurna Circuit it’s quicker, steeper, and far more about that single, outrageous skyline.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Close-up of Machapuchare (Fishtail) — Unlike the far-off skyline views on many treks, Mardi puts Machapuchare practically in your face: a steep, dramatic peak that dominates the ridge. Sunrise and sunset light on that near-vertical fluted face is why people linger up top; you’ll get photos that actually look like Nepal postcards, but without the tourist crush.
  2. Mardi Ridge & High Camp Viewpoint — A raw alpine ridge with open meadows and rock-strewn skyline, this is where the trail opens up and you feel exposed to the mountains. The scale is intimate — you can pick out glaciers, seracs and little gullies — and it’s fantastic for clear, close panoramic views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

  3. 360° Annapurna-Dhaulagiri Panorama — In a relatively short hike you get big-mountain payoff: sweeping vistas that sweep from the Annapurna range over to Dhaulagiri. The neat thing here is the compactness — you don’t have to be on a long expedition to stand in front of both ranges in one morning.
  4. Rhododendron Forests and Quiet Wildlife — Lower down the trail is dense, mossy forest threaded with bright rhododendrons in spring. It’s peaceful, birdy, and you’ll likely hear or glimpse pheasants, woodpeckers and langur monkeys. The contrast between these lush slopes and the stark high ridge is a big reason the trek feels varied.
  5. Gurung Villages & Teahouse Culture — This isn’t just scenery — the trail runs through small Gurung settlements where teahouses and terraces feel authentic and low-key. Simple hospitality, fresh dal bhat, and chats with locals make the mix of nature and culture here more relaxed than the busier Annapurna routes.

Personal favorite: Close-up of Machapuchare (Fishtail).

  • Price Fluctuations: Peak trekking months push up lodge rates and guide fees. Off-peak seasons offer better bargains but come with the risk of unpredictable weather and fewer services.

Pro-tip: Start your trek early in the morning during peak seasons to dodge crowds and catch the golden light hitting Annapurna’s jagged peaks.

Difficulty Level: This trek is generally considered moderate. While it’s not overly technical, expect some steep ascents and descents, especially as you approach the Mardi Himal Base Camp.

Starting Point: The trek kicks off in Pokhara. To get there, you can catch a tourist bus from Kathmandu, which takes about 6-8 hours. Buses leave regularly, and you can book tickets through various travel agencies in Thamel.

Major Landmarks Along the Route:
  • Deurali: A charming village where you can find tea houses and stunning views of the Annapurna range.
  • Mardi Himal Base Camp: This is the highlight of the trek, offering breathtaking views of Mardi Himal and Annapurna South.
  • Low Camp: A great spot to rest and soak in the panoramic views, often with fewer crowds.
  • Forest of Rhododendron: Depending on the season, you might catch these flowers in full bloom, painting the landscape in vibrant colors.

Type of Terrain and Scenery: The trail features a mix of well-defined paths, rocky sections, and some steep climbs. You’ll traverse lush forests, terraced fields, and high alpine meadows, with views that shift dramatically as you ascend. Expect to see the majestic Annapurna range, including Annapurna South and Machapuchare.

Typical Vegetation and Wildlife: The trek starts in subtropical forests, transitioning to rhododendron and oak as you gain elevation. In the higher altitudes, you’ll encounter alpine flora. Wildlife sightings can include monkeys, various bird species, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive Himalayan tahr. Keep your eyes peeled; nature has a way of surprising you!
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

The Mardi Himal Trek offers a thrilling mix of challenge and reward. Expect variable weather; mornings can be crisp, while afternoons may bring sudden rain. Dress in layers to adapt quickly. The trail is well-marked but steep in sections, so watch your footing, especially on rocky paths. Take your time; the views are worth every step.

Altitude can sneak up on you. Hydrate and ascend gradually to avoid discomfort. Wildlife encounters are rare but possible; if you spot a monkey or a deer, keep your distance and don’t feed them.

Pack smart—good trekking poles can save your knees on descents. Start early to beat the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains. Embrace the grind; the moment you reach the viewpoint, with the Annapurna range sprawling before you, will make every effort worthwhile.
