- Shuklaphanta Grassland (the prairie) — Vast, flat tussock grasslands are the park’s signature. Wide-open views, sunrise light and the sound of grasshoppers make it feel unlike the typical Nepal you imagine; this is where most animal sightings happen and where photographers and birders linger the longest. (personal favorite — best at dawn.)
- Swamp deer (Barasingha) herds — Shuklaphanta is one of Nepal’s strongestholds for barasingha. Large groups graze the grasslands, and seeing them move across the plains is a slow, hypnotic wildlife moment you won’t forget.

Jeeps and early-morning walks give the best shot at catching signs or sightings without the crowds of more famous parks.
- Mohana River and seasonal wetlands — Small rivers and oxbow lakes punctuate the grassland, creating lush riverine strips and temporary marshes that attract waterbirds, otters and amphibians. These changing water pockets make every visit feel a bit different.
- Watchtowers, jeep safaris and grassland walks — There aren’t long alpine treks here, but the park’s network of safari tracks, observation towers and ranger-led walks are the ways to explore — flexible, close-to-nature, and excellent for slow wildlife watching.
- Sal forest patches and mosaic habitats — Beyond the prairie, pockets of Sal forest, riverine woodland and community-managed buffer areas increase biodiversity and offer short hiking options where you can switch from open plains to shady trails in minutes.
