Backpacking in Apeldoorn
👀 For curious travelerscity ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 8, 2026

Everyone talks about Apeldoorn because of the Apenheul zoo and Palace Het Loo, but for a backpacker, the real value is how it sits quietly in the middle of The Netherlands, on the edge of the Veluwe forests, between Amsterdam and the German border. The city is calm, safe, and a bit suburban, with leafy streets, a compact center, and easy trains everywhere, but nightlife is mild and hostels are limited, so it’s less social than Utrecht or Arnhem. I like it for slow days: cycling into the Veluwe, palace gardens, cheap supermarket picnics, and then slipping out again when I want more chaos.

  5. Julianatoren — A no-frills, old-school family amusement park focused on younger kids; think colourful rides, live shows and short queues — ideal if you’re travelling with little ones or want a nostalgic half-day.
  6. De Naald (The Needle) — A striking monument with local historical significance set near the palace parks; it’s an easy stop for a photo and a short read about Apeldoorn’s wartime memory and royal connections.
  7. Grote Kerk (Market Church) — The town’s main historic church on the market square; visit for the interior, occasional concerts and to feel the old civic heart of Apeldoorn while you browse the nearby market stalls.
  8. Theater Orpheus — Apeldoorn’s main cultural venue: a busy program of theater, music and dance in a building locals are proud of; even if you don’t catch a show, the foyer and café are lively places to people-watch.
  9. Apeldoorn Station & Stationsplein — More than a transit hub: the square hosts markets and events, the station is a handy architectural waypoint, and it’s where a lot of local life funnels — useful and interesting to wander around.
  10. Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij (heritage steam railway) — Historic steam trains run from Beekbergen (on Apeldoorn’s edge) to Dieren; it’s a tactile, slow-paced experience — great for train buffs, families or anyone who likes a scenic ride through the woods.
A few obvious day trips just outside Apeldoorn: Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe (and the Kröller-Müller Museum), the handsome Hanseatic town of Deventer, and the medieval streets of Zutphen — De Hoge Veluwe is my personal favourite for the mix of wide nature, cycling and world-class art.

Compared to the quieter, more residential neighborhoods on the outskirts, the center pulses with energy without tipping into tourist chaos. You trade a bit of peace for connection, but that’s the point: it’s where you meet fellow adventurers and tap into the city’s rhythm. Comfort is basic but reliable, and the price-to-vibe ratio is solid, making it a smart base for exploring Apeldoorn on a backpacker’s budget.

Most attractions are within 20-30 minutes on foot, so you save money and get a feel for the streets that no bus window can offer.

  • Bus (Syntus): The local bus network runs roughly from 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM. Tickets cost around €3 for a single ride, with day passes offering better value if you plan multiple trips. Buses are reliable but can be slow during peak hours, so factor in some buffer time if you’re on a tight schedule.

  • Bicycle Rental: Renting a bike costs about €10-15 per day and is a sweet spot between speed and cost. The Netherlands is famously bike-friendly, and Apeldoorn’s flat terrain and dedicated lanes make cycling a comfortable and efficient way to cover more ground than walking without the expense of taxis.

  • Taxi: Taxis are available but pricey, starting around €5 just to get in and about €2 per kilometer. Use them sparingly—ideal for late-night returns or when you’re hauling heavy gear. They offer maximum comfort but at a steep cost compared to other options.

👛 Costs (as of 13 March 2025)Travel costs and budget guide for Apeldoorn

Backpacking in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, offers a clear trade-off between cost and comfort, with prices reflecting its mid-sized city vibe—less touristy than Amsterdam but still with solid amenities.
  • Dorm Accommodation (High Season): Expect to pay around €25-€35 per night in hostels during peak months (spring to early fall). These dorms are basic but clean, often with shared bathrooms and simple communal spaces.
  • Dorm Accommodation (Off-Season): In the quieter months, prices drop to about €18-€25. This is a good time to snag a bed in a well-rated hostel without the crowds or premium pricing.
  • Meals: Budget about €10-€15 per day if you stick to supermarkets, street food, or casual cafes. A sandwich or takeaway meal runs €3-€6, while a sit-down meal at a modest restaurant might push closer to €12-€15.

  • Local Transport: Apeldoorn is compact, so walking covers a lot. For longer trips, single bus rides cost around €2.50. If you plan multiple rides, a day pass is smarter.
  • City Transport Pass: A day pass for buses runs about €6-€7, offering unlimited rides within the city. This is a solid value if you want to explore beyond the center without renting a bike.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Museums and attractions typically charge €5-€12. For example, the CODA Museum or Apenheul Primate Park fall in this range, making cultural stops affordable but not free.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Factor in around €3-€5 for essentials like bottled water, occasional coffee, or small souvenirs. This buffer keeps your day smooth without surprises.

Altogether, a realistic daily budget for backpacking in Apeldoorn ranges from about €40 on a tight budget (off-season dorm, self-catered meals, minimal transport) up to €70 if you lean toward more comfort or activities. This balance lets you decide where to save and where to splurge, turning your trip into a strategic win rather than a guessing game.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Apeldoorn is generally safe, but a few tips can enhance your experience. Stay aware in crowded spots like the market or near the train station; pickpockets can be opportunistic.
