Muiderslot is not a ruin or a museum piece behind glass: the moat-ringed brick castle is fully furnished, and you can only enter on a guided tour or with a timed ticket slot, which surprises people who expect to wander freely. It stands at the mouth of the river Vecht in Muiden, about 15 km east of Amsterdam on the IJmeer shore. The pattern is simple. Weekends and school holidays fill the slots, while weekday mornings stay quiet. Entry costs roughly €17 to 20, fair given the staged interiors, though the castle is compact and takes under two hours. Bus 320 from Amsterdam makes it easy. I arrived over the little bridge and the moat suddenly filled the whole frame, red brick doubled in still water, with a bell ringing somewhere behind me. Photos work best from the grassy bank opposite.
