Carré sells standing-room and last-minute returns far cheaper than its stalls, and most travelers learn that only after paying full price. It sits on the Amstel in Amsterdam, North Holland, beside the Magere Brug. Pricing follows a pattern: big names sell out, smaller shows linger. I once arrived for a sold-out show with no ticket, assuming walk-ups worked. They don’t. Check the box office the week before. The hall is intimate, gilded, and far less crowded than the Rijksmuseum.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in The Netherlands

The best area for backpackers is the Weesperbuurt and Plantage side of the Amstel, a 5 to 15 minute walk from the theater. It is calm, safe at night and has cafés and supermarkets for self-catering. For a social scene, the Rembrandtplein and Nieuwmarkt area is a 10 to 15 minute walk or a short tram ride away. It has many budget dorms, bars and easy contact with other solo travelers, though weekends are loud. De Pijp, a short tram ride south, is livelier for food and markets, with a younger crowd and a good mix of hostels and shared rooms. All three connect easily by tram and metro.

Entry is by ticket only, and it is worth it if you pick a show you want to see. Prices commonly range from about €25 to €100 or more depending on the act and seat. The horseshoe hall means even cheaper upper seats have a decent view.
Take metro line 51, 53 or 54 to Weesperplein, then walk about 5 minutes to the Amstel. Tram 7 or 19 to Weesperplein also works. From Amsterdam Centraal, the ride takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and walking from the center is around 30 minutes.
