- The wide, empty beach: miles of soft sand with almost no crowds — you can walk for hours, find shells, watch the light change, and feel like you’ve got the shoreline to yourself. Great for long hikes and proper silence.
- De Boschplaat: the raw, eastern tidal plain where sand, mud and shallow water meet. It’s a bird-magnet and a landscape that keeps shifting with the tides — perfect for solitary long walks and brilliant for spotting waders and migrating flocks (personal favorite).
- Dune ridges and viewpoints (Hoge Berg area): the island’s living dunes offer small climbs, scrubby vegetation and surprisingly big views over the Wadden Sea and inland pools. The subtle elevation changes make for scenic, varied hiking without any steep mountains.
- Seal haul-outs: seals regularly lounge on nearby

- Seal haul-outs: seals regularly lounge on nearby sandbanks at low tide. You can watch them from the beach or on guided trips; keep your distance and let them bask in peace. A quiet, magical wildlife moment if timing is right.
- Birdwatching hides and migration spectacles: small hides and vantage points around the island let you stalk (respectfully) the huge variety of migrants and wintering birds. Spring and autumn bring the biggest numbers — binoculars essential.
- Island hiking and cycling routes: a simple, well-signposted network connects dunes, wetlands and the village. The paths are flat and forgiving — ideal for budget travelers who want to cover a lot of ground by foot or rented bike in a day.
- The village and lighthouse: the tiny, thatched-roof village sits inside the park and feels part of the landscape rather than separate from it. Pop into the visitor centre, stroll cobbled streets, and use the lighthouse as a handy landmark before heading back into the wild.
