The thing nobody tells you about Zandvoort beach until you’re standing there in your sandy socks: it’s basically Amsterdam’s “sea escape” on a local train line, so you can go from canal hangover to North Sea plunge in about 30 minutes without touching a bus. Zandvoort sits on the North Sea coast, west of Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and it feels like the city’s slightly chaotic seaside cousin. The beach is long, reasonably clean, and great for walking, kitesurfing, and cold, bracing swims, but on sunny weekends it turns into half of Amsterdam lying on towels, so don’t expect solitude. The vibe is beach clubs, music, and fries-with-mayo rather than wild nature. Surf is hit-or-miss, snorkeling is pointless, but it’s cheap and easy to reach, with plenty of budget snack bars and basic rooms. Compared with quieter Bloemendaal or more polished Scheveningen, Zandvoort is the scruffy, convenient, totally “good enough” option.
