The thing nobody tells you about Noordwijk beach until you’re already there, sandy and smug, is how absurdly easy it is to reach from Leiden or Amsterdam, yet how quickly it feels like you’ve slipped out of city mode and into “I might actually relax” mode. Noordwijk sits on the North Sea coast between Zandvoort and Katwijk, a straight shot by bus or bike from Leiden, which makes it a very doable half-day escape for backpackers in The Netherlands. The beach is wide, clean, and organized in that very Dutch way, with decent swimming in summer and mellow beginner-friendly surf when the wind cooperates, but don’t come expecting Portugal-level waves or any real snorkel action in this murky water. It’s livelier and a bit more polished than Katwijk, less chaotic than Zandvoort, with beach clubs, cheap-ish snack bars, and a few hostels and campsites that keep it just within backpacker range—if you’re okay paying a little extra for the sea air.
