Backpacking in Day of the Sun
🌟 Highlightfestival ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Years ago, Kim Il Sung’s Birthday felt like a tightly choreographed mass rally: endless parades, compulsory attendance, and foreigners shepherded from one spectacle to the next with zero slack in the schedule. Today it’s still controlled and choreographed, but the edges have softened a little; you see more phones out, a few genuine smiles, and the odd off-script moment if you pay attention. The main action hits Pyongyang, especially Kim Il Sung Square and the big monuments along the Taedong River. For backpackers, this isn’t a casual drop-in festival; it’s a state ritual with fireworks, military flavor, mass dances, patriotic music, and a mostly local audience in their best clothes. It runs over a couple of days, but your tour dictates everything. Worth it only if you’re ready for heavy propaganda, zero spontaneity, and strict, expensive logistics.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Day of the Sun

  • Grand mass performances (mass gymnastics and mosaic card sections) — A jaw-dropping sea of people moving like one organism: thousands of performers, precise choreography, giant flip-card mosaics that create images across stadium stands. It’s less “show” and more a scale-driven experience — mesmerizing, almost hypnotic. (Personal favorite.)
  • Official parades and ceremonial marches — Tight rows of uniformed units, synchronized marching and formal salutes give the day a very ritualized, pageant-like feel. The emphasis on discipline and ceremony makes these moments feel deliberately theatrical and highly organized.

  • Monument visits and public wreath-laying — Big statues, monumental plazas and carefully staged floral tributes are central to the mood. Quiet, ceremonial stops at statues or memorial sites contrast sharply with the louder performances and show you how the holiday is woven into public life.
  • Traditional music, mass choirs and staged cultural shows — Large choirs, orchestras and folk ensembles perform alongside more modern pieces. Costumes, traditional instruments and dramatic staging combine to create an emotional, very communal musical experience you don’t often get elsewhere.
  • Street decorations, processions and the public atmosphere — Banners, flags, illuminated facades and organized processions turn central avenues into bright, ordered celebrations. It’s less spontaneous festival chaos and more a collectively produced spectacle — watching people participate in that choreography of celebration is oddly compelling.
