Years ago Kočani felt like a sleepy agricultural town where the day revolved around rice fields and factory shifts; now it’s still low-key, but the cafés are livelier, the facades a bit fresher, and there’s just enough student energy to keep evenings humming. Tucked in eastern North Macedonia, east of Štip and south of Kratovo, it’s more of a practical stop than a headline destination. For backpackers, Kočani works best as a base for the geothermal baths at nearby Banja, hikes in Osogovo, and slow walks along the river rather than for big-city culture. Buses link it easily with Skopje and Štip, the center is walkable, and you’ll mostly rely on taxis or local buses for out-of-town springs and trailheads.
