Years ago Štip felt like a slightly frayed university-industrial town: factory smoke on cold mornings, loud kafanas, almost zero tourism infrastructure. Today the air’s clearer, the cafés are brighter, and you’ll see the odd backpack, but it’s still very much a local town first, traveler stop second. Sitting in eastern North Macedonia, roughly between Skopje and Strumica, Štip works best as a low-key pause on an overland route or a base for nearby hills and short hikes, not as a “must-see” city.
