Backpacking in Molden Mountain
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Most people hear “Molden” and picture a casual viewpoint stroll. It isn’t. Molden Mountain, above Lustrafjord in Luster, western Norway (Sogn area), makes you work for every meter of that panorama. The trail is short by Norwegian standards, roughly half a day out-and-back, but it climbs steadily through forest, boggy patches, and rocky sections that will light up your calves, especially if it’s wet. The payoff is savage in the best way: a cliff-edge view straight down Lustrafjord that feels bigger than many longer, more famous routes. It’s easier to reach than icons like Trolltunga or Besseggen, but public transport can be patchy, so timing buses to the trailhead takes planning. I’ve seen families and casual hikers up there, but they all arrive breathing hard and grinning like they just stole something.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. Panoramic fjord summit — The high point gives near-360° views looking down into the fjords and out across the Sunnmøre coast. Few hikes pack that “standing-on-top-of-the-world” fjord drop into one short climb; on clear days the water, islands and distant peaks all line up like a nature movie set.
  2. The Sunnmøre Alps skyline — Molden sits right where the jagged Sunnmøre Alps rise abruptly from the water, so the surrounding peaks feel impressively close and dramatic. That tight, alpine skyline makes the scenery harsher and more cinematic than many gentler Norwegian trails.
  3. Photogenic summit ledges — The route finishes on exposed ledges and a flat summit plateau that are ridiculously good for photos and for feeling that delicious, slightly nervous thrill without technical climbing. If you time

If you time it for golden hour, the light on the ridges and fjord is unforgettable.
  4. High-alpine meadows and streams — In summer the trail runs through compact alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers, meltwater trickles and small tarns, offering color and calm between the steeper sections. It’s a nice contrast: brutal rock climbs one minute, soft moss and flowers the next.
  5. Traces of mountain farming and local life — Below the trail you’ll spot old summer farms, stone walls and grazing sheep that remind you this landscape has been used by people for centuries. Those cultural touches add a human scale to the big views and make the hike feel rooted in place, not just a postcard.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: Molden Mountain’s weather swings hard. Late June through early September offers the most stable conditions—think dry trails and minimal snow. Outside this window, expect sudden rain, wind, and lingering snow patches that slow your pace and soak your gear.

  • Temperature: Summer highs hover around 15-20°C (59-68°F), perfect for sweating it out without overheating. Early spring or late fall drops below freezing, turning the trail into a slippery challenge better suited for experienced winter hikers.

  • Daylight Hours: The midnight sun from late May to mid-July means you can push your limits with nearly 24 hours of light. After that, daylight shrinks fast, cutting your hiking window and forcing earlier stops.

  • Crowds: July and August bring the most hikers, especially on weekends. If

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer opens up fishing, swimming in mountain lakes, and wild berry picking—perfect side quests after a tough climb. Winter’s for hardcore ski-trekkers, but that’s a whole different beast.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport peak in July and August. Booking outside these months can save you a chunk, but be ready for fewer services and colder nights.

Pro-tip: Hit Molden in early September—cooler air, thinning crowds, and a crispness that sharpens every view, making the grind feel like a personal victory.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Molden Mountain offers a straightforward yet invigorating hike, but don’t let that lull you into complacency. Weather can shift rapidly; a sunny morning can morph into misty rain by noon. Dress in layers and pack a reliable waterproof jacket.

The terrain is a mix of well-marked paths and rocky sections that demand attention. Watch your footing, especially on steeper inclines. Navigation is generally easy, but keep a map handy—cell service can be spotty.

Wildlife encounters are rare but possible. If you spot a reindeer, admire from a distance; they’re more skittish than they seem.

Start early to avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquility. With the right gear and a steady pace, you’ll reach the summit, where the panoramic views reward your efforts with a breathtaking sweep of Norway’s wild beauty.

It’s all part of the adventure, and trust me, the payoff is worth every step.
