Backpacking in Besseggen
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Your boots scrape loose stone, wind shoves at your backpack, and on your left the lake lies dark and far below while the one on your right glows glacier-blue, almost fake, like someone cranked the saturation too high. That knife-edge ridge is Besseggen, in Jotunheimen National Park in central Norway, a few hours by bus from Oslo or Bergen. The hike is famous for a reason: the views hit hard and keep coming, and the logistics are easy, with boats and buses funneling hikers to the start. But it’s longer and tougher than the Instagram squares suggest; the main route takes most people 6–8 hours, with steep scrambling that punishes bad weather and weak knees. Compared to nearby Norwegian trails like Trolltunga or Preikestolen, Besseggen feels wilder, less engineered, more “mountain” than “viewpoint,” and that’s exactly why I’d still choose it on a clear day.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #3 hike in Norway
Reasons people choose to hike the here

The Besseggen hike in Norway is a magnet for backpackers, and for good reason. It’s a grueling yet rewarding trek that delivers jaw-dropping views without breaking the bank. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts; you’ll climb steep ridges and navigate rocky paths, but the payoff is a stunning panorama of emerald lakes and jagged peaks.

Getting there is a breeze. Public transport whisks you to the trailhead, making it accessible even for those on a tight schedule. You can tailor your hike to fit your pace, whether you want a quick day trip or a more leisurely multi-day adventure.

What’s more, it seamlessly integrates into a longer backpacking route through Norway’s wild landscapes. You can hop from one breathtaking spot to another, each more exhilarating than the last. The burn read more 👉

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. The Besseggen Ridge Crest — That narrow, rocky spine you walk along is the star: exposed, a little loose underfoot, and dramatic because one side drops steeply to Gjende. It’s the kind of ridge that makes you pause, look around, and feel like you’ve actually earned the view — not something you get on a flat, groomed trail.
  2. Gjende’s Emerald Water — From the ridge the lake looks unreal: an intense turquoise/emerald caused by glacial rock flour suspended in the water. The color contrast against grey rock and alpine tundra is jaw-dropping and a photographer’s dream — especially on a sunny afternoon.
  3. The Twin-Lake Contrast (Gjende vs Bessvatnet) — Side-by-side lakes with very different colors and levels, running parallel below the ridge, is a rare visual trick. Seeing the dark, deep Bessvatnet

Seeing the dark, deep Bessvatnet beside the glowing Gjende from high above is one of those “only here” scenes that makes Besseggen stand out from other hikes.
  4. Panoramas of Jotunheimen Peaks — Once you’re up there the surrounding high mountains open up: serrated ridgelines, glacier-fed valleys and peaks like Besshøe and the Gjendealpene range. The scale and alpine character feel proper wild — not just a nice view, but a full-on mountain theatre.
  5. Memurubu, the Ferry Ride and Mountain-Lodge Vibe — The classic one-way hike is tied together by a scenic ferry crossing and the old Memurubu lodge — a proper Norwegian mountain-hut atmosphere that makes the route feel like a day out with history. Between boat timetables, lunch stops on the shore, and hikers swapping stories, that cultural/ logistical combo is part of what makes Besseggen special.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: The trail opens mid-June through September. Early summer can still hold patches of snow, making footing tricky and slower. By July and August, the weather settles into a reliable rhythm—cool, crisp, and mostly dry, perfect for pushing hard without overheating.

  • Temperature: Expect daytime highs around 15-20°C (59-68°F) in peak summer. Nights dip to 5-10°C (41-50°F), so pack layers. Early or late season hikes risk colder snaps, especially at higher elevations.

  • Daylight Hours: Summer floods the region with light—up to 20 hours in June—giving you a massive window to tackle the ridge without rushing. By September, daylight shrinks but still offers a solid 12-14 hours.

  • Crowds: July and August bring the heaviest foot traffic. The trail can feel like a slow-moving parade on weekends.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for hiking, but late August and September also open up berry picking and early autumn colors, adding a sensory layer to your trek.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport prices spike in July and August. Booking early is essential. Late June and September offer better deals without sacrificing trail quality.

Pro-tip: Start your hike early in the morning during shoulder months to dodge crowds and catch the ridge bathed in golden light—nothing beats that first panoramic gulp of fresh mountain air.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Besseggen is a breathtaking trail, but it demands respect. The weather can shift in an instant; one moment you’re basking in sun, the next you’re dodging raindrops. Dress in layers, and don’t underestimate the chill at altitude. The trail is steep and rocky, with sections that require careful footing. Keep your eyes on the path, especially near the edges.

You might encounter wildlife, like reindeer or the occasional curious fox. Maintain a respectful distance; they’re part of the landscape, not your photo op.

Timing is key. Start early to avoid the crowds and give yourself ample daylight. A solid pair of hiking boots is non-negotiable; they’ll save your ankles on the uneven terrain. Hydrate often, and pack snacks to keep your energy up. The reward? That stunning view over the turquoise lakes—worth every step.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Besseggen is a wild ride. The thrill of balancing on that ridge, with turquoise lakes on one side and deep valleys on the other, is electric. You’ll feel alive. But be ready for the crowds; this trail can get busy, especially in summer. It’s a trade-off: you’ll share the experience, but the views are worth every step and every elbow bump. Embrace the hustle; it’s part of the adventure.
