Backpacking in Rondane
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 2, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Rondane as “remote wilderness,” but the surprise for backpackers is how quickly you can be on a real mountain route from a train-accessible valley, without paying a krone in entrance fees. Rondane National Park sits in Eastern Norway, between Otta and Ringebu, just east of the Gudbrandsdalen corridor. It’s a dry, high plateau of rounded 2000 m peaks, more lunar than lush, with reindeer if you’re patient and quiet, but not much in the way of dramatic lakes or forests compared with Jotunheimen or Dovrefjell. Trails are well-marked and multi-day hut-to-hut routes are straightforward, yet the terrain is rocky and exposed, so bad weather feels serious. Access by bus and train is decent, but trailheads can still mean extra transfers. Camping is easy and cheap; DNT huts are comfortable but not exactly budget. Crowds cluster around Rondvassbu; step one valley away and it goes calm and almost eerily still.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Rondeslottet — The park’s highest summit (about 2,178 m) and the classic “you-made-it” viewpoint. Sharp, windswept ridgeline with huge 360° panorama of other peaks and plateaus; a proper mountain hike rather than a stroll.
  • The 2,000-metre massif (Storronden, Høgronden, etc.) — A cluster of several 2,000-m peaks that form Rondane’s backbone. Rugged ridges and big exposed shoulders make for memorable ridge-hopping and alpine scenery you don’t forget.
  • Smiubelgen — The serrated, “comb-like” western ridge: dramatic, rocky silhouettes that are great for photography and more technical scrambling. Feels wild and remote compared with the gentler valleys.
  • Wild reindeer herds — One of Europe’s oldest free-roaming reindeer populations lives here. Seeing them grazing on the plateaus is a highlight;

  • Rondvatnet and Rondvassbu — A mirror-calm mountain lake with the well-placed Rondvassbu cabin nearby. Excellent base for day hikes (including the ascent to Rondeslottet), sunrise reflections, and easy strolls along the shore.
  • Høvringen & the seter (summer farm) landscapes — Rolling high-pastures, traditional mountain farms and birch woodland meet open tundra here. Great if you want gentler walks, summer flowers, and a taste of how people have used the mountains for centuries.
  • Marked trails and hut network — A tidy system of marked routes and DNT cabins makes multi-day trekking realistic without carrying heavy gear. Trails range from mellow valley walks to full alpine days, so you can plan it to your skill level.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Weather: Rondane’s weather swings sharply. Summer (June to August) offers the most stable conditions, but sudden rain and chilly winds are common. Winter months plunge temperatures well below freezing, often -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F), making backpacking a serious challenge without proper gear.

  • Temperature: Summer highs hover around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), which feels crisp but manageable. Shoulder seasons can still be cold, especially at night, so pack layers. Avoid late autumn and early spring unless you’re prepared for snow and ice.

  • Daylight Hours: Summer brings nearly 24-hour daylight, especially in June, maximizing hiking time. By late autumn, daylight shrinks to just a few hours, limiting safe trekking windows and increasing risk.

  • Crowds: Peak season in July and August

  • Crowds: Peak season in July and August sees more hikers, but Rondane remains less crowded than Norway’s fjord regions. Early summer and late August offer quieter trails without sacrificing weather too much.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for hiking and fishing. Winter attracts cross-country skiers and snowshoers, but backpackers face tougher terrain and shorter days. Spring and autumn are transitional and unpredictable.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs peak in summer. Booking early can save money. Off-season rates drop, but limited services and harsher conditions often offset savings.

Pro-tip: Aim for late June to early July—weather is friendliest, daylight is generous, and the crowds haven’t fully arrived. This timing preserves your energy and budget for the trails that truly matter.
