Snow squeaks under your boots, breath hanging white in the air as a horse-drawn sleigh slides past, bells clinking, smoke from charcoal grills curling around you with the smell of reindeer meat and waffles. This is Rørosmartnan, the winter market that takes over the old mining town of Røros in central Norway, near the Swedish border. It’s part folk festival, part trading fair, part time machine. You get Sami joik, accordions, fiddles, and a lot of wool-clad Norwegians who treat this as both a party and a reunion. Figure five icy, full-on days. It’s crowded, touristy at the core, but the wooden houses, real working sleighs, and brutal cold keep it from feeling fake. Worth it if you like history you can literally shiver in.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  • Historic open-air market — Hundreds of stalls spill into the narrow streets of Røros, selling everything from hand-knitted wool and wooden kitchenware to regional crafts and antiques. The market feels like a living trade fair: merchants laid out the old-fashioned way, real local goods, and that satisfying chaos of bargaining and discovery.
  • Traditional costumes, parades & living history — Locals and visitors don bunads and period mining outfits, and you’ll catch parades and reenactments that make the town’s past tangible. It’s not just a spectacle — people commit to the role, so you actually get to walk around inside a piece of history.
  • Folk music and cultural performances — Expect fiddles, choir singing, folk dancers and intimate street performances that pop up between stalls and cafés.

  • Hearty mountain food and warm drinks — Food stalls serve local cheeses, smoked specialties, flatbreads, sweet pastries and warming drinks like mulled wine and hot coffee. Cheap, delicious, and perfect for thawing fingers between exploring — a great way to taste the region without breaking the bank.
  • Horse-drawn sleighs, snowy streets & UNESCO-town atmosphere — Røros’s preserved wooden buildings, lantern-lit alleys and occasional sleigh rides make the setting as memorable as the festival itself. The whole place has a cozy, small-town winter vibe that no modern stadium or indoor fair can replicate.
