Backpacking in Al Khuwair
👀 For curious travelerscity ranked #27
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 6, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Al Khuwair as “just offices and malls,” but for backpackers it’s actually Muscat’s cheapest, most walkable everyday neighborhood. Wedged between Qurum and Ghubrah in the capital’s sprawl, it works less as a “destination” and more as a practical base: cheap Indian cafeterias, mid-range supermarkets, and buses or shared taxis fanning out to Muttrah, Ruwi, and the coast. It’s safe, a bit anonymous, light on hostels and nightlife, and quieter than Muttrah or Qurum, so you trade instant postcard views for low costs and easy logistics.

In Al Khuwair, the real flavor hits when you dive into shuwa, a slow-cooked lamb dish wrapped in banana leaves, rich with smoky spices that linger long after the last bite. For drinks, skip the usual and sip on Omani kahwa, a cardamom-spiced coffee that’s as much about the ritual as the taste—served strong, often with dates to balance the bitterness. Backpackers find their groove in bustling local markets and street stalls, where the air hums with the scent of grilled meats and fresh herbs. Eating here is casual but respectful—sharing food is common, and it’s polite to accept at least a taste when offered. The vibe is unpretentious, a genuine slice of Omani daily life.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know
