Your flip-flop sinks into coarse, hot sand as a wave slaps the rocks hard enough to spray your shins with warm, salty mist; behind you, someone is arguing in Urdu over who forgot the charcoal, and in front of you the Arabian Sea is a flat, metallic sheet under a hazy Karachi sky. French Beach sits between Hawke’s Bay and Paradise Point on the outskirts of Karachi, a semi-private fishing village that’s tried very hard to rebrand as a beach escape. For backpackers, it’s a “maybe.” Cleaner than Sandspit and less chaotic than Clifton, but still no postcard: litter lurks behind the huts, and the water can be rough with a nasty shore break, so swimming is more “careful wade” than carefree plunge. The rocky shoreline gives it character and decent surf potential on the right swell, but don’t come expecting Bali-level breaks or real snorkeling; visibility is usually poor and there’s not much reef life. The vibe swings from chilled weekday emptiness to loud, rented-hut parties on weekends, and you’ll need a car or hired ride to get here, plus cash for a basic hut since there’s no true budget hostel scene or walkable food strip—just simple, negotiable seafood and snacks if you talk to locals. Compared with nearby Hawke’s Bay, French Beach feels slightly more exclusive and less trashed, but also more limited: no cheap chai stalls lining the sand, no easy sunset stroll to random eateries, just you, the rocks, and the sense that this is more a Karachi local hangout than a destination worth crossing Pakistan for. As a side trip from the city, it’s solid; as a “must-see” beach on a Pakistan backpacking route, it’s comfortably overrated.
