Dugout canoes grind onto warm sand, and fishermen haul in the morning catch while kids splash past your ankles. That is Hula Beach, on the Central Province coast southeast of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Crowds are nearly nonexistent, the water is clear and the village atmosphere is easy. Facilities are basic and nothing is polished. Come for reef-edged shallows and real village life. Travelers who want resorts, nightlife or reliable comforts should skip it.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #24 beach in Papua New Guinea
What makes this beach worth visiting

Backpackers stop here because Hula village gives you a working fishing community instead of a resort. You can watch canoes launching from the beach at dawn, buy fish directly from the people who caught it, and talk with villagers who are usually curious about visitors. It also works as a quiet reset after the pace of the capital, with clear shallow water for a swim and nobody selling you anything.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. Hula village waterfront: the heart of the place, with houses along the shore, nets drying on the sand and daily life spilling onto the beach.
  2. Swimming in the bay: calm, shallow, warm water close to shore, good for a long unhurried dip.
  3. Snorkeling the nearby reef: ask villagers to take you out by canoe, and you can float over coral and small reef fish.
  4. Dugout canoe watching: boats head out and return with the catch, and the landing is the liveliest hour on the beach.
  5. Sunset on the sand: the sky over the Papuan coast turns orange while smoke from cooking fires drifts through the village.
Most visitors skip the morning fish landing, yet it is the best way to meet people and see how the village really runs.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Port Moresby is the practical place to stay, because Hula is a stilted-village coast roughly 100 km southeast with no hostel scene of its own. Budget travelers usually choose guesthouses and small hotels in Boroko, Waigani or near Ela Beach, which cost about K150 to 400 (US$40 to 105) a night and have secure compounds. Staying there lets you arrange a hired driver for the day, and you can meet other travelers at the cafés near the harbor. A village homestay in Hula itself is possible if you ask the community first and bring food or pay a small fee.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Hula is a small, quiet village beach, and the main risk is not the water but getting there and back. Roads between Port Moresby and the coast have had hold-ups, so travel by day with a trusted local driver and arrange a pickup time. Swimming is mostly gentle, with little surf, though the afternoon wind can make the sea choppy. The sun is strong, so bring a hat and water. Ask villagers before swimming or photographing, and keep valuables out of sight.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Hula Beach

Hula is about 100 km southeast of Port Moresby along the Magi Highway, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way. Most travelers hire a private driver or join a tour arranged through a Port Moresby hotel, typically K500 to 1,000 (US$130 to 260) for the vehicle. PMV minibuses run along the highway toward Kwikila and Hula but are slow and tough to time for a return, so go early.
Swimming is the best use of the beach, with shallow, usually calm water that is warm all year, around 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F). There is no real surf, and snorkeling is limited, so bring your own mask and ask villagers about the better patches of reef offshore. Visibility is best from June to September, in the morning before the wind rises.
There is no official entrance fee, but the land and shoreline belong to the village, so ask permission on arrival. Expect to pay a small community fee of around K10 to 50 (US$3 to 13) per person, or a similar amount for parking and a guide. Bring small notes in kina, as there are no ATMs in Hula.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

Be on the sand at first light, when canoes come in with the night’s catch and the whole village seems to gather. Bring small cash, plenty of water and a respectful attitude, and ask before photographing anyone.
