You get a secret bonus at Fiesta de la Candelaria: by planting yourself in Puno for the festival, you accidentally score the best possible acclimatization to Lake Titicaca’s altitude before tackling treks in the region. Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca in southern Peru, near the Bolivian border, and for a week or so every February it turns into a full-body workout in costume form. Candelaria is a Catholic–Andean mashup: brass bands, panpipes, pounding drums, and endless dance troupes in sequined, heavy outfits that look fun until you try one on at 3,800 meters. The crowd is mostly Peruvians and Bolivians with a smaller ring of backpackers hugging the sidewalks, which keeps the vibe intense but not curated. It runs roughly ten days, with a couple of peak parade days; worth it if you like chaos, culture, and late nights, not if you hate noise or crowds.
