Backpacking in Manila Ocean Park
👍 Recommendedattraction ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 27, 2026

Forget the filtered feeds: Manila Ocean Park is not Southeast Asia’s answer to Singapore’s S.E.A. Aquarium. It’s smaller, more chaotic, and yes, you’ll be dodging selfie sticks and school field trips. Smack in the heart of Manila, right on the edge of Manila Bay, this is the Philippines’ first oceanarium—part aquarium, part theme park, part sensory overload. For backpackers, it’s a mixed bag: the ticket price is steep by local standards, and the crowds can feel relentless, especially on weekends. But if you want a crash course in Filipino family culture—kids shrieking at stingrays, grandparents picnicking outside—it’s unbeatable. The underwater tunnel is a genuine wow, even if you’ve seen bigger. Don’t expect serenity; expect spectacle.

Why Manila Ocean Park should be on your travel list

Manila Ocean Park isn’t your typical backpacker hotspot, and that’s exactly why it earns a spot on many itineraries. Sure, it’s crowded and the entry fees can sting compared to the rest of the Philippines’ wallet-friendly scene, but this place packs a punch beyond the usual aquarium experience. It’s an iconic urban escape where you get a rare blend of marine education and interactive thrills—think walking through a glass tunnel surrounded by sharks and rays, a heart-pounding moment that’s hard to find elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Beyond the spectacle, it’s a cultural touchstone for Manila, showcasing local marine biodiversity and conservation efforts in a way that connects you to the country’s natural heritage. 💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

Oceanarium
Let’s cut through the hype: yes, you’ll be shoulder-to-shoulder with families wielding selfie sticks, but the Oceanarium is the real backbone of Manila Ocean Park. This isn’t just a fish tank—it’s a 25-meter walk-through tunnel surrounded by 14 million liters of saltwater and a swirling, hypnotic parade of rays, sharks, and groupers. The scale is impressive for Southeast Asia, and the feeling of being enveloped by marine life is pure, wide-eyed entertainment, no matter your age.

Jellies Exhibit
Instagram loves the neon-lit jellyfish tanks, but the real magic is how these creatures float like living lava lamps. The exhibit is small, but the mood lighting and ambient music create a surprisingly meditative vibe. It’s a rare moment of calm in a park that can otherwise feel like a carnival. … read more 👉

Sea Lion Show
Here’s where you’ll see the crowds at their loudest, but the sea lions genuinely steal the show. These aren’t just circus tricks; the trainers have a rapport with the animals that’s obvious even from the cheap seats. Kids will be howling, but adults will catch themselves grinning too. It’s pure, unpretentious fun.

Trails to Antarctica
Yes, it’s a manufactured snow zone in the tropics, but if you’ve never seen a penguin up close, this is your shot. The penguin exhibit is the real draw—watching these birds waddle and dive is oddly captivating. The snow play area is mostly for kids, but the penguins are worth the detour.

Fish Spa
My personal favorite. Stick your feet in a tank and let dozens of tiny fish nibble away your dead skin. It sounds weird, and it is, but it’s also hilarious and oddly relaxing. You’ll leave with smoother feet and a story that’s way more memorable than another aquarium selfie.

All-Star Bird Show
It’s easy to overlook, but the bird show is a riot of color and personality. Parrots and other birds perform tricks and interact with the trainers. It’s not high art, but it’s high-energy and surprisingly engaging, especially if you need a break from the marine focus elsewhere in the park.

Manila Ocean Park sits smack in the middle of Manila’s bustling Ermita district, a spot that’s as chaotic as it is convenient. If you’re chasing the Instagram-perfect vibe, expect crowds and a price tag that’s higher than the average Filipino neighborhood. But here’s the real deal: staying in Ermita puts you right where the action is—street food stalls, lively bars, and a mix of locals and travelers that keeps the energy genuine. It’s safe enough if you stick to the main roads and keep your wits about you, which is a fair trade-off for being steps away from the park and other cultural spots like Rizal Park and Intramuros.

For solo backpackers, Ermita’s social scene is a magnet. You’ll find plenty of fellow travelers in the area, making it easy to swap stories over cheap beers or join impromptu street food crawls. If you want to dodge the tourist bubble but still be close, Malate is another solid choice—slightly quieter but with a similar vibe and easy access to Manila Ocean Park. Both areas offer that gritty, lived-in Manila feel that’s far more rewarding than the sanitized tourist zones.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Manila Ocean Park isn’t your quiet escape—it’s loud, crowded, and yes, a bit touristy. But if you’re into seeing a massive underwater tunnel packed with sharks and rays, it’s worth the hustle. The real magic? Getting up close with marine life you won’t find just anywhere in the city. Just brace yourself for the crowds and ticket prices that reflect the hype.

✈️ When did I visit Philippines?
