Three waterfalls pour off a cliff wall in the Cirque de Salazie, and Les Trois Salazes is the one most people travel here to see: a sheer cascade of roughly 250 meters that you can pick out from the road on a clear morning. What matters just as much is the village setting, because Hell-Bourg sits beside it, with its Creole houses, wet-stone lanes and the smell of woodsmoke and damp ferns. It lies in the interior of Réunion, in the Cirque de Salazie, northeast of Saint-Denis. Expect cloud to swallow the falls by midday, a winding mountain road with plenty of tour vans, and a sound like constant low thunder when flow is high. Viewing is free, though parking and food add up. Unlike nearby Voile de la Mariée at Cilaos side country, the cascade here is a trio spilling down a single wall.

  • Austral Winter (May to October): Les Trois Salazes is at its most reliable from June to September, when the cirque of Salazie sees cooler, clearer mornings of roughly 10 to 20°C (50 to 68°F) at village level. Waterfalls run thinner but the trails stay firm, and daylight lasts about 11 hours.
  • Summer Rains (December to April): Expect 18 to 28°C (64 to 82°F), heavy afternoon downpours and a real cyclone risk from January to March. Falls roar, but paths turn slick and roads in the cirque can close.
  • School Holidays (July to August, mid-December to January): Local families fill gîtes and trails, and rental cars and rooms cost more.
  • Shoulder Months (May, October, November): Fewer people, fair weather, and the best chance of cheap beds.
Start walking by 8 am, because cloud usually rolls into the cirque by midday and hides the cliffs.
