Backpacking in La Roche Merveilleuse
👌 Worth visitingunique site ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The walk to La Roche Merveilleuse starts on the edge of Cilaos town and takes about an hour round trip, so no full-day hike or guide is needed. The rock sits above Cilaos, in the mountainous interior of Réunion, inside a volcanic cirque you reach by a road with hundreds of hairpins. The path climbs through damp forest on steep, root-laced steps, and your thighs notice before your eyes do. At the top, cool air carries woodsmoke from town, and the cirque walls open out in layers of green and grey. Clouds can swallow the view within minutes, which is the hard part. Entry costs nothing and crowds stay thin. It suits walkers and photographers who like a short effort and a big view. Anyone wanting a sweeping, all-day summit challenge will find it small.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #7 unique site in Réunion
Why La Roche Merveilleuse should be on your travel list

La Roche Merveilleuse gives you the Cilaos cirque in one compact frame, without the commitment of the big summit treks. You can fit the climb into a morning, then spend the rest of the day in town. That matters when the road up is slow and winding, since the effort of arriving is already part of the trip.

It also fits a wider route. Cilaos works as a base for the Piton des Neiges approach and the Route des 400 virages, so a short warm-up walk here helps you gauge the weather and your legs before a bigger day. Afterward, you can sit down to the lentils Cilaos is known for, and sip the local wine grown on the slopes.

The price of entry is a sweaty staircase, and the payoff is a quiet lookout where you may well be the only person.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. La Roche Merveilleuse viewpoint: the rocky outcrop itself, with the town of Cilaos spread below and the cirque ridges rising behind. Sit on the rock and wait for the clouds to shift.
  2. The forest trail up: a steep, stepped path through damp vegetation, with mossy trunks, birdsong and a steady climb that warms you up quickly.
  3. Views toward the Piton des Neiges: on clear mornings the island’s highest peak shows over the cirque rim. It is a good way to read the weather before a longer hike.
  4. Cilaos town center: a mountain village of tin-roofed houses and bakeries, where you can eat the local lentil dishes after your walk.
  5. Cilaos thermal springs: the mineral waters here have drawn visitors for generations, and a soak is a fine remedy for tired legs.
  6. Embroidery of Cilaos: shops sell fine hand-stitched linens,

  7. The road of 400 turns: the drive or bus ride up is a sight in itself, with cliffs, tunnels and sudden drops into the gorge.
La Roche Merveilleuse itself takes about an hour and a half with pauses, and the town sights add another half day.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Austral Winter (May to October): Dry and clear on the coast, with daytime highs of 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F) and cool nights near 15 to 18°C (59 to 64°F). This is the easiest window for the roadside walk and for views over the Saint-Benoît coast. Daylight runs roughly 11 hours.
  • Austral Summer (November to April): Hot and humid at 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F), with heavy showers that can turn the rock and nearby paths slick. Cyclone season peaks from January to March, and the windward east coast gets the most rain. Daylight stretches to about 13 hours.
  • School Holidays (July to August, December to January): Local families crowd the east coast, and rental cars and rooms cost more.
Arrive early in the morning, when the rain is least likely and the light on the basalt is best.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Saint-Benoît is the practical base for backpackers, with the rock only a short drive from town. The town has a market, supermarkets, bakeries and bus connections along the east coast, so you can stock up on food and move on easily. Rooms are mostly simple guesthouses and gîtes rather than party hostels, which suits a quiet stay.

Bras-Panon, a short hop north, is a calmer option with a relaxed, local feel and a well-known Sunday market. It works well if you want a slower pace and cheaper meals.

Sainte-Anne, just beyond Saint-Benoît, is a small village on the coast with a famous church and a few guesthouses. It is peaceful, safe and walkable at night.

If you want a more social scene, Saint-Denis or the Hell-Bourg area in Salazie are better for meeting other travelers and hikers. Most visitors without a car find it easiest to sleep in Saint-Benoît and use buses, since public transport thins out in the evening.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

La Roche Merveilleuse is a large basalt rock formation on Réunion’s east coast, near Saint-Benoît, that locals regard as a scenic and spiritual landmark. It sits beside the road, and you can see it from the nearby coastline without any ticket or booking. The surrounding area has black volcanic rock and dense tropical greenery typical of the rainy windward side.
La Roche Merveilleuse needs only about 30 minutes to an hour for the viewpoint and a few photos. Pair it with Saint-Benoît’s market and nearby sights such as Sainte-Anne’s church for a half-day outing. A full day lets you add the Bras-Panon area or a walk along the coast.
To reach La Roche Merveilleuse, drive the N2 coastal road from Saint-Denis, about 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, or from Saint-Pierre, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Without a car, take a Car Jaune bus to Saint-Benoît, then a short taxi ride or local bus. Bus fares are a few euros, and rentals start around €30 a day.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

La Roche Merveilleuse suits walkers who like a short, steep climb, photographers chasing cloud and light, and anyone using Cilaos as a base. I would go early, bring a light rain layer, and keep the afternoon free for lentils and a thermal soak.
