Backpacking in Plage de L’Étang-Salé
👍 Recommendedbeach ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The sand at Plage de L’Étang-Salé is black, crushed from volcanic basalt, and it gets hot enough at midday to hurt bare feet. The beach lies on the southwest coast of Réunion, a short drive from Saint-Louis and Saint-Pierre. Swimming is the weak point: the Indian Ocean pounds in with strong currents, so the surf-lifeguard-patrolled zone between the flags is the only sensible place to get wet. Skip snorkeling here; the coral lagoons of the west coast are far better. Do come for the dramatic setting, with a fringe of filao pines rustling behind the sand, a clean, well-kept shoreline, and a promenade of simple crêperies and snack stands that suit a small budget. Evenings are quiet. Waves slap the dark shore, and the air smells of salt and pine needles.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #6 beach in Réunion
The unique appeal for travelers

Plage de L’Étang-Salé earns a stop because it is the island’s most distinctive black-sand beach, and it sits on a coast where most of the lagoon beaches are pale and calm. Backpackers who have spent days on volcanic hiking trails come here to stretch out on warm basalt grains, watch surfers read the long Indian Ocean swells, and eat a cheap picnic under the filao pine forest that runs right behind the sand. The village is small, so there is no party scene, just families, local surfers and a few hikers. That makes it a restful pause between the Piton de la Fournaise side of the island and the resorts of the west. The setting also offers a different kind of outing: the black sand and the Gouffre lava-tube coast nearby give you a geology lesson with a swim break, and the shaded pine paths suit a walk when the sun is fierce.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  1. The black volcanic sand beach: the main event. Fine basalt grains, dark and warm, stretch along the shore, and the contrast with the white foam is striking, especially in low afternoon light. Bring sandals, because the sand scorches at midday.
  2. The supervised swimming zone: lifeguards mark a small area between flags, and this is the only part where bathing is advisable. Currents elsewhere are strong, so respect the flags.
  3. Surfing and bodyboarding: the beach break draws local surfers when the swell rolls in. Watching from the sand is a good free show, and beginners can find lessons in the area.
  4. The filao forest paths: pine trees run behind the beach, with shaded trails for walking or cycling. The needle-covered ground is soft, the air smells resinous, and it is the coolest place to be in the afternoon.

  5. The Gouffre of L’Étang-Salé: a short walk along the coast brings you to a rocky inlet where waves surge into a volcanic chasm with a loud boom and spray. It shows the lava coast at its most raw, so stay behind the barriers.
Start with the beach itself in the morning, before the sand heats up and while the light is soft, then save the Gouffre for later when the swell is at its most dramatic.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Austral Winter (May to October): Dry, sunny and mild, with highs of 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F) and cool nights near 14 to 17°C (57 to 63°F). Daylight runs roughly 11 to 12 hours. The black sand stays pleasant underfoot, and the forest trails behind the beach are comfortable.
  • Summer (November to April): Hot and humid, 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F), with afternoon showers and cyclone risk peaking from January to March. Days stretch to about 13 hours. Water is warmest, but the sand gets hot enough to burn bare feet by midday.
  • School Holidays and Weekends: Reunion’s December to January break and the July to August break fill the parking areas and picnic lawns, and nearby rentals rise by roughly €15 to 40 a night.
Aim for September or October, when the weather is settled, the sea is warming and the picnic crowds have thinned.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

The village of L’Étang-Salé-les-Bains, a few minutes’ walk from the sand, is the most practical base. It is small and quiet, with a handful of guesthouses, gîtes and apartment rentals, plus a few bakeries, small shops and beachfront snack stands. Expect a low-key scene where you meet other travelers on the promenade or at the beach rather than in a party hostel. Rooms and studios run about €45 to 90 a night, and sharing a studio brings that down for pairs.

Saint-Louis and Les Avirons, a short drive inland and uphill, offer cheaper rooms and more supermarkets, though you will want a car or a bus connection to reach the beach.

For a livelier evening scene, Saint-Pierre sits roughly 20 to 25 minutes south by road. It has the island’s best choice of restaurants, bars and budget beds, and it works well if you prefer to visit Étang-Salé as a day trip. The coast near Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is about 35 to 45 minutes north and has the strongest backpacker social scene on the west coast.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Plage de L’Étang-Salé is a lifeguarded beach, and the supervised stretch is the only part of the coast where I would swim. Reunion’s west coast has no coral lagoon here, so waves break directly on black volcanic sand, and currents can be strong. Check the flag at the lifeguard post, stay between the marked zones and keep to the shallows if you are unsure. Following the shark incidents on the island, swimming outside the supervised area is restricted, so respect the posted rules.

The sun is intense year-round, and the dark sand heats up enough by midday to hurt bare feet, so bring sandals and a hat. Mornings are calmer and cooler. Cars in the parking areas are the main theft risk, so leave nothing visible inside. Local families picnic here daily, so the beach feels relaxed.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Plage de L’Étang-Salé is about 25 to 30 minutes by car from Saint-Pierre and roughly 40 minutes from Saint-Gilles-les-Bains via the N1 expressway. Buses run from Saint-Louis and Saint-Pierre on the Car Jaune network, with fares around €2 to 3, though they are less frequent on Sundays. Parking near the seafront is free.
Plage de L’Étang-Salé suits swimming in the supervised zone, with lifeguards on duty daily and conditions best on calm mornings. Waves break onto black sand, so bodyboarding and surfing are possible for those with experience, though the shore break can be heavy. Snorkeling is not the draw here, since there is no reef or lagoon, and Boucan Canot or Saint-Gilles offer better options about 35 to 45 minutes north.
Plage de L’Étang-Salé is free to visit, with open access to the sand, showers and the lawns behind it. Parking is also free, and nearby kiosks and restaurants sell drinks and meals for roughly €5 to 15. Sun loungers are not typically part of the experience, so bring your own towel and shade.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Plage de L’Étang-Salé hides its best trick behind the sand: the pine forest, which stays cool and smells like resin while the beach cooks. I would bring a picnic and a pair of sandals, spend the hottest hours under the trees, and return to the shore once the light drops and the black grains stop burning.
