Most people only realize after leaving that Măgura quietly solves a huge Romania problem: you get the Bucegi-Piatra Craiului mountain drama without the Bran and Brașov crowds breathing down your neck. Măgura is a scattered village in southern Transylvania, strung along a ridge between Bran and Zărnești, inside Piatra Craiului National Park. It’s more basecamp than “town”: a handful of guesthouses, farm smells in the cool morning air, dogs barking across the valley at dusk. For backpackers, it works best as a 2-3 night nature stop, not a logistics hub. Trails start almost from doorsteps—ridge walks toward Peștera, routes down to Zărnești Gorge—so you trade bus schedules for your own legs. Getting in usually means a bus to Bran or Zărnești, then a taxi or pre-arranged ride; once you’re up here, you walk everywhere. It’s quiet, social only if you click with whoever’s in your guesthouse that night; don’t expect hostels or nightlife, just long dinners, homemade cheese, and stars. Costs run a bit higher than Zărnești but below Brașov, and it feels very safe, more like staying in a spread-out mountain hamlet than a tourist town.
