Backpacking in Ergaki Mountains Trek
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 29, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Ergaki as some remote, untouched wilderness, but on peak summer weekends you’re more likely to dodge tent cities and selfie sticks than feel alone. The Ergaki Mountains Trek sits in southern Siberia, in the Western Sayan range of Krasnoyarsk Krai, and it earns every kilometer you grind out. Granite teeth, hanging lakes, and moody passes give you big-mountain drama without true alpine altitude, but the trails are often muddy, rooty, and brutally steep in short bursts. Multi-day routes run roughly 40–70 km depending on your loop, and the constant up‑and‑down makes it feel harder than the numbers suggest. You can reach the main trailheads by bus or shared taxi from Abakan or Krasnoyarsk, which is easier than many Siberian treks, but still slower and rougher than Caucasus hotspots like Dombay or Elbrus. My legs cursed it; my camera loved it.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. The Sail (Parus) — dramatic granite fin: A thin, sail-shaped rock that juts out from the ridge — one of Ergaki’s signature photo spots. It’s not just pretty; the approach gives you that “alpine” feel with exposed slabs and a real sense of scale you don’t get on forested trails.
  2. Zvezdny (Star) Peak viewpoint — sweeping ridgeline panoramas: Hike up onto the main ridge for wide, uninterrupted views of serrated peaks and distant Sayan ranges. Sunrise and sunset here turn the granite into gold and purple — the kind of panorama that makes the effort of the climb worthwhile.
  3. Mirror Lake (Ozero Zerkalnoye) — glassy alpine reflections: A calm, high-altitude lake that perfectly reflects surrounding cliffs and sky on still mornings. It’s an ideal campsite or day-stop for photographers and anyone

  4. Valley of Rivers (Dolina Rek) — tumbling streams and lush meadows: Deep river gorges, cascades and wide flowered meadows sit below the high crags, giving the trek variety — water features, easy walking and chances to cool off. The contrast between roaring streams and barren ridges is a trademark of Ergaki.
  5. High-alpine lake basins and tundra — vivid colors and wildlife: Clustered turquoise and dark alpine lakes amid lichen-covered rocks and tundra. These basins are great for short circuits, spotting marmots and ptarmigan, and enjoying the weird, quiet beauty of Siberian high country that feels a world away from the usual European trails.

Pro-tip: Start your trek early in the season to catch the thawed trails and wildflowers with fewer crowds, but be ready for chilly nights that keep you sharp and alert.
