Backpacking in Putorana Plateau Trek
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 28, 2026

Most people only realize on the flight home that the real advantage of the Putorana Plateau is this: once you’re in, you basically have a private national park the size of a small country, with almost no one else on the trail. The trek sits in northern Siberia, in Krasnoyarsk Krai, west of Norilsk, where the taiga thins and the basalt tablelands start to fracture into canyons and waterfall-choked valleys.

This is a long, committing route—usually 7–12 days—across broken plateau, steep river gorges, and tundra that sucks at your boots. Scenery swings from mirror-flat lakes and sheer basalt walls to endless horizons that feel almost Martian. It’s tough: navigation, river crossings, weather that flips from sun to sleet in an hour. Public transport gets you as far as Norilsk or Dudinka; after that it’s charter boats or helicopters, which makes it far less accessible than, say, Altai or Kamchatka, but also far wilder.

  • Basalt tablelands and cliff rims — sheer, blocky basalt plateaus drop into knife-edged escarpments that give you sweeping panoramas you won’t find on forested trails; stand on a cliff and you can watch dozens of lakes and canyons fanned out below like a slow-motion map of the landscape.
  • Lake Lama — a long, fjord-like lake carved into the plateau with impossibly clear, jewel-blue water and steep rock walls; it feels remote enough that landing on its shore still tastes like genuine exploration rather than a postcard stop.

  • Arctic tundra and summer wildflower carpets — instead of trees you get a wide, low landscape of moss, lichens, dwarf shrubs and bursts of flowers in summer; it’s a strange, fragile beauty that changes color with the light and makes the plateau feel otherworldly compared with temperate hikes.
  • Wildlife and bird colonies — remote, undisturbed habitat for reindeer, Arctic foxes and a bunch of seabirds and raptors; wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but when they happen they’re raw and unfiltered — no crowds, no fences, just you and the animals.

  • Crowds: The plateau sees few visitors year-round. Summer attracts small groups of serious trekkers and scientists. You’ll rarely feel crowded, but expect some company on popular routes during peak months.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer opens up fishing, kayaking, and wildlife spotting—moose and reindeer are active. Outside summer, these activities vanish under snow and ice.

  • Price Fluctuations: Logistics and guides spike in summer due to demand and accessibility. Off-season trips are cheaper but require specialized gear and experience, pushing costs back up.

Pro-tip: Hit the plateau in late June or early July to catch the full midnight sun and the plateau’s wild pulse before the mosquitoes get unbearable.

Difficulty Level: This trek is considered challenging. Expect rugged terrain, steep ascents, and unpredictable weather conditions. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but those with a decent fitness level and some hiking experience can tackle it.

Starting Point: The trek typically starts in the town of Norilsk.
  • Getting There: You can reach Norilsk by flying from Moscow or other major cities. There are no direct trains, so flying is your best bet. Once in Norilsk, you might need to arrange a taxi or local transport to get to the trek’s starting point.

Major Landmarks Along the Route:
  • Lake Keta: A stunning lake surrounded by cliffs, perfect for a rest stop and some photos.
  • Putorana Mountains: Towering peaks that offer breathtaking panoramic views and some challenging climbs.
  • Waterfalls: You’ll come across several waterfalls, especially in the spring when the snow melts, adding to the scenery.

Type of Terrain and Scenery: The terrain is a mix of rocky paths, alpine meadows, and steep climbs. Expect to walk on both well-trodden trails and more rugged areas. The scenery is absolutely phenomenal, with dramatic cliffs, deep gorges, and vast plateaus that make every step worthwhile.

Typical Vegetation and Wildlife:
  • Vegetation: You’ll see a mix of larch forests, tundra, and alpine flowers. The flora changes as you ascend, with hardier plants at higher elevations.
  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for reindeer, foxes, and even the occasional brown bear. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting various species, including eagles and owls.

Pack your sense of adventure, and be ready for some stunning landscapes that’ll make the effort totally worth it!
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

The Putorana Plateau Trek is a wild ride, but it’s not without its quirks. Weather can shift faster than you can say “Russian tundra,” so pack layers and be ready for anything from sun to sudden rain. The terrain? Expect steep ascents and rocky paths that demand your full attention. Navigation can be tricky; a good map and compass are your best friends here.

Wildlife is part of the charm—reindeer and the occasional bear might cross your path. Keep your distance and respect their space; they’re not here for a selfie.

First-timers often underestimate the altitude and the need for solid footwear. A sturdy pair of boots will save your ankles on those uneven trails. Pace yourself, enjoy the journey, and when you finally reach that breathtaking viewpoint, you’ll know every step was worth it.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

The Putorana Plateau Trek is a raw, unfiltered slice of Siberian wilderness. Picture jagged cliffs, roaring waterfalls, and the thrill of solitude. But here’s the kicker: it’s remote. Supplies are scarce, and weather can turn on a dime. You’ll earn that breathtaking view, but be ready for the grit. If you embrace the challenge, the reward is a connection to nature that’s hard to find anywhere else.
