Backpacking in Triglav Lakes Valley
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Triglav Lakes Valley as a gentle “fairy-tale stroll,” but the reality is closer to a rocky stair-master with a backpack, especially if you push beyond the first lakes. The valley sits high inside Triglav National Park, in the Julian Alps above Bohinj, running between the Komna plateau and the Hribarice area toward Triglav itself. The hike is gorgeous and relentless: roots, limestone steps, and long, calf-burning zigzags, then suddenly a glassy lake under white cliffs that makes every swear word on the ascent feel worth it. It’s a full-day outing for most, longer and rougher than the classic Vintgar or Pokljuka walks, but less committing than a Triglav summit push. Public transport to Bohinj and the Savica trailhead works well, then your legs do the rest. I remember hitting the third lake, dropping my pack, and realizing I’d underestimated both the effort and the silence.

And let’s not forget how seamlessly it fits into a longer backpacking route. It’s a perfect pit stop between other Slovenian highlights, allowing you to dive deep into nature without losing momentum. After a day of hiking, the first cold beer at a local hut hits differently—like a well-deserved trophy for your efforts.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. The Seven Triglav Lakes (the glacial lake chain) — a literal staircase of alpine lakes set in a glacial bowl: each pool has its own color and personality, from emerald shallows to deep blue mirrors. Seeing them lined up like that is the valley’s signature moment and what makes this hike feel more like walking through a postcard than a trail.
  2. Mirror-like reflections at sunrise — when the wind drops in the early morning the upper lakes turn into perfect mirrors, reflecting jagged peaks and the sky. It’s a photographer’s dream and beats a lot of other alpine spots because the lakes sit in a compact, dramatic basin; (personal favorite — get there before sunrise and bring a warm layer).

  3. Sheer limestone walls and glacial cirques — the valley is framed by steep, sculpted cliffs and classic glacial amphitheaters that give the route serious drama. Those vertical rock faces and hanging meadows make the landscape feel much wilder and more alpine than lower, tree-covered trails.
  4. Close wildlife and alpine flora — watch for marmots whistling from the rocks, shy chamois on the slopes and alpine birds wheeling overhead; in summer the meadows are thick with tiny, colorful mountain flowers. The wildlife encounters are often closer and more frequent here because the valley stays quieter than the main tourist loops.
  5. Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih (the mountain hut) and mountain culture — the rustic hut near the lakes is part shelter, part social hub: simple food, bunks, and that friendly mountain-hut vibe you don’t get on day-only walks. It’s also a good place to learn local routes, rest up, and feel how alpine shepherding and hut culture still shape the valley.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and hut prices peak mid-summer. Booking early or aiming for shoulder months can save you a solid chunk of cash.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail early in the shoulder season mornings—cool air, fewer hikers, and that first light hitting the lakes makes the effort feel electric.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Triglav Lakes Valley is a slice of paradise that rewards every ounce of effort. Picture this: you crest a ridge, and there it is—the turquoise lakes shimmering below, a sight that makes your heart race. But let’s be real: the trails can get crowded, especially in peak season. If you’re craving solitude, aim for early mornings or late afternoons. The views are worth it, but the company? That’s a mixed bag. Embrace the challenge; it’s all part of the adventure.
