Backpacking in Kozjansko Regional Park
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

Most people picture Kozjansko Regional Park as deep alpine wilderness; it’s not. It’s a lowland, rural mosaic of orchards, vineyards, old farms, and forested hills in eastern Slovenia, between Celje and the Croatian border. For backpackers, it’s calm, cheap, and slow rather than dramatic. Trails are mostly gentle day hikes and farm tracks, with soft views over the Sotla valley instead of big peaks. You’ll see deer, birds of prey, and a lot of traditional agriculture, but not the dense wildlife of a true mountain park. Access by bus and hitchhiking is workable but patchy, and you’ll rely on guesthouses, tourist farms, or small pensions more than wild camping. Fees are low or tied to specific sites. Compared with Triglav or Logar Valley, Kozjansko feels like a quiet, lived-in countryside, not a headline national park—and that’s exactly its strength if you want space and silence.

  • Traditional orchard meadows and old fruit varieties — The park is famous for its mosaic of orchard meadows full of heritage apple and pear trees; in spring the blossoms are ridiculous, and in autumn the landscapes and local markets brim with unusual fruit. (Personal favorite — nothing beats walking those blossom-scented paths.)
  • Sotla (Sutla) River valley — A quiet border river with pleasant floodplain habitats, reed beds and shallow channels; good for slow paddles, photography and spotting waterbirds and amphibians away from roads.
  • Kozjansko hiking trails and viewpoints — A network of well-marked loops over gentle hills, mixed forests and meadows; you’ll find short day-hikes and longer routes that reward you with ridge views, solitary beech copses and nice picnic spots.
  • Orchids, butterflies and birdwatching hotspots — The park’s varied meadows and scrub support a surprising diversity of orchids, butterflies and raptors; bring binoculars in spring and early summer for the best displays of color and bird activity.
