Backpacking in Lendava
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Lendava is not for anyone chasing big-city buzz, bar crawls, or Instagram trophy shots every ten minutes. It’s for when you’re ready to slow the trip down and actually hear your own footsteps. Tucked in Slovenia’s far east, right on the Hungarian border, it feels more borderland than postcard. The low hills smell of damp earth and vineyards; the castle hill and Vinarium tower give soft, hazy views instead of drama. Buses and trains connect, but not constantly, so it works best as a deliberate detour between Maribor and Hungary, or a quiet base for wine hills and thermal spas. The center is compact and walkable, evenings are café-slow rather than hostel-wild, and you’ll meet more locals than backpackers. It’s cheaper and calmer than Ljubljana or Maribor, safe almost to a fault, and ideal when you want one or two days of border-country stillness in the middle of a faster route.

Ranked #14 town in Slovenia
The unique appeal for travelers

Backpackers flock to Lendava for its strategic location near stunning hikes and cultural sites. The walkable streets invite exploration, while cozy guesthouses and small-scale hostels offer a homey feel. You can savor local dishes that burst with flavor, making meals a communal experience. It’s a place where slow travelers and solo adventurers can connect, yet it also suits small groups seeking a laid-back vibe. Most visitors stay a couple of days, soaking in the atmosphere before heading to nearby beaches or vineyards. Lendava’s charm lies in its balance of quietude and community, making it a rewarding stop on your journey.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Vinarium Panoramic Tower — climb the slender observation tower on the hill above town for sweeping views (on a clear day you can pick out Slovenia, Hungary, Austria and Croatia). It’s short, photogenic, and gives a real sense of Lendava’s borderland position.
  • Lendava Castle (Grad Lendava) & Museum — a compact castle with a tidy museum inside that tells the story of the region: local history, ethnography and rotating exhibitions. Good for a couple of hours and for seeing the town from a small elevated plateau.
  • Castle Park and Summer Amphitheatre — shady paths, picnic spots and an intimate outdoor stage where local concerts and festivals happen in summer. Nice for people-watching and catching a cultural event without needing a big itinerary.

  • Castle Park and Summer Amphitheatre — shady paths, picnic spots and an intimate outdoor stage where local concerts and festivals happen in summer. Nice for people-watching and catching a cultural event without needing a big itinerary.
  • Main Square (Mestni trg) and Town Hall — the heart of day-to-day Lendava: cafés, bakeries, benches and multilingual signs that show off the town’s Slovene-Hungarian mix. Stop for a coffee and just watch life roll by.
  • Parish Church (St. Catherine) — a calm historical church that anchors many local rites and festivals. Interiors are modest but atmospheric; it’s useful for getting a feel for older Lendava and the town’s religious traditions.
  • Lendava Calvary (Kalvarija) — an easy hillwalk with Stations, small chapels and rewarding views back over town. It’s a local pilgrimage spot that’s also a peaceful escape and a low-effort way to stretch your legs.
  • Old wine cellars and tasting spots — Lendava’s wine culture is real and visitable: small family cellars and informal tasting rooms inside town serve local Prekmurje varieties (think Furmint and white blends). Great for chatting with winemakers and trying wines you won’t see everywhere.
  • Local gallery / Cultural Centre — a compact cultural hub that hosts exhibitions, film nights and bilingual events reflecting the town’s mixed heritage. Timing your visit for an exhibition or a small performance is a nice way to go beyond the tourist track.
  • Ledava river promenade and pocket parks — short riverside walks and little green pockets where locals walk dogs or feed birds. Not dramatic, but useful for a relaxed late-afternoon stroll and some quiet local color.
  • Weekly market and neighbourhood food stalls — markets (check the schedule) are where you’ll meet producers, taste local cheeses, sausages and fresh bread, and feel the multilingual pulse of town. It’s one of the best, most honest ways to encounter everyday Lendava life.
For day trips just outside Lendava: the thermal baths at Moravske Toplice (Terme 3000), the rolling hills and hikes of Goričko Nature Park, and nearby Hungarian towns like Lenti for a cross-border spa or market visit — my personal favorite to explore is Goričko for quiet trails, small villages and unexpected viewpoints.

Lendava moves at its own pace, a quiet hum rather than a roar. The streets don’t demand your watch; they invite your senses. Morning light filters through the leaves of chestnut trees, casting dappled shadows on cobblestones that have felt the footsteps of centuries. Here, time is less about strict schedules and more about catching the rhythm of daily life — the bakery’s first warm bread, the slow clink of café cups, the occasional burst of laughter from a market stall. Lendava is generally safe, but staying aware enhances your experience. The town center is lively, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots, especially near cafes and markets.
